The third-generation Toyota Tundra arrived in 2021 following years of development and drew mixed reactions from reviewers. Toyota retired its long-admired V8 in favor of twin-turbo six-cylinder engines, one offered as a hybrid. The new powertrains have proven less dependable than earlier versions, which had been a major advantage versus rival trucks.

Sales have still exceeded 100000 units annually, yet Toyota continues to refine the model. For 2027 the pickup receives a light refresh featuring minor revisions to bumpers and grilles, updated infotainment software that includes a standard dash cam, additional safety equipment as standard, and a new Trailhunter package that offers less capability than the Tacoma Trailhunter.

Powertrains carry over unchanged with the twin-turbo V6 and hybrid twin-turbo V6. Toyota has not yet shared an on-sale date, though further details are expected this fall.

Trailhunter package targets buyers seeking capable off-road performance at a lower cost

The Trailhunter package stands out as the key addition. Offered on the SR5 trim, it includes Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires, Old Man Emu suspension upgrades, front recovery hooks, and extra underbody shielding. Off-road aids comprise a locking rear differential, crawl control, Multi-Terrain Select, and distinctive bronze wheels.

Toyota positions the package for drivers wanting factory off-road enhancements without the higher price of the TRD Pro. It serves as a rival to the Ford Tremor and Chevrolet Trail Boss. Additional Tundra trims such as SR, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone cover needs from basic work duties to premium luxury.

Toyota also refreshes the Tundra technology features

Every 2027 Tundra now includes the 14-inch infotainment display previously limited to upper trims, paired with Toyota latest multimedia platform that delivers 5G connectivity via AT&T, a customizable interface, and an improved voice assistant. A built-in Drive Recorder and dash cam that records 20-second segments comes standard. Hybrid models add a 2.4-kW inverter for powering equipment or accessories.

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 becomes standard equipment with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane centering, and road sign recognition.
