Kia has delivered major updates to the all-new second-generation 2027 Kia Seltos. Once seen as a plain entry-level subcompact SUV, it now resembles a stylish compact version of the two-row Telluride. Beyond the fresh design, the Seltos brings greater refinement along with many new features for a complete overhaul.

Dimensions have grown modestly, with the new model 1.8 inches longer, just over an inch wider, and three-quarters of an inch taller. The wheelbase extends by 2.4 inches, which boosts interior room. Rear legroom reaches a class-leading 39 inches, up one inch from before. The front cabin widens by about an inch at the shoulders, and cargo space increases by one cubic foot, offering more comfort overall.

The longer wheelbase improves ride quality, aided by Kia's fine suspension calibration. Although the front struts and rear multilink setup use passive dampers, the motion feels controlled and impacts are absorbed smoothly. The experience suggests a higher class, supported by strong noise insulation. Handling remains steady with responsive steering, though the vehicle prioritizes comfort over sharp cornering compared to the prior version. The better ride makes this a clear step ahead.

The powertrains carry over unchanged, with a new hybrid arriving later. The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 147 horsepower with a CVT, while the tested turbo 1.6-liter four makes 190 horsepower with an eight-speed automatic. The final-drive ratio shifts slightly to 3.65:1 to match the new 19-inch tires, keeping performance characteristics similar.

Weight has increased to 3668 pounds, 336 pounds more than the previous test vehicle. This added mass with unchanged power leads to slower acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 8.2 seconds versus 7.1 seconds before. The quarter-mile passes in 16.4 seconds at 86 mph, compared to 15.5 seconds at 91 mph earlier. Still, these figures stay competitive with rivals like the Chevy Trax, which hits 60 mph in 8.5 seconds.

The extra weight affects handling too, with skidpad grip dropping to 0.78 g from 0.83 g previously on the same tire model. Braking from 70 mph now takes 181 feet instead of 162 feet. Everyday brake feel stays strong despite the change.

LOWS: Less haste, has put on a few pounds, not as athletic on the skidpad.

The added weight brings useful features to the X-Line SX all-wheel-drive model. A panoramic sunroof with power shade is now available, along with ventilated front seats and a Harman/Kardon audio system featuring an amp and subwoofer via the Prestige package. That package also includes the 12.3-inch navigation touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a surround-view camera.

Highway fuel economy rises by 3 mpg to 30 mpg despite the weight gain, while city economy holds at 24 mpg for a combined 26 mpg rating. The upcoming hybrid should improve these numbers further once EPA estimates appear.

VERDICT: The Seltos has grown larger and grown up!

Nonhybrid 2027 Kia Seltos models are on sale now. The loaded X-Line SX AWD tested here starts at $34,285, with the Prestige package adding $2500 and minor options bringing the total to $37,250. Lower trims begin at $26,485 for the LX FWD, keeping the model affordable while raising its appeal.
