In the Chevrolet Corvette family, the Grand Sport has traditionally stood out as the optimal choice. While the badge originated in 1963 on a dedicated race car, the C4-generation model (along with later C6 and C7 editions) established the Grand Sport as a capable middleweight performer. It combined the standard car's small-block V-8 with the wider track and upgraded suspension components from the more potent Z06 and ZR-1/ZR1 variants. This same concept returns for the 2027 Grand Sport, now with added strength from the latest Stingray's 6.7-liter V-8.

Go Big or Go Home

Known as the LS6 in tribute to GM's early-1970s 7.4-liter big-block and the 5.7-liter V-8 from the C5 Corvette Z06, this sixth-generation small-block displaces 409 cubic inches. It produces 535 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 520 pound-feet of torque at 4600 rpm. Relative to the top version of the prior 6.2-liter LT2 engine, these figures represent gains of 40 horsepower and 50 pound-feet, with both peaks occurring at lower engine speeds. A compression ratio of 13.0:1 contributes to the improvement, the highest in any Corvette to date, compared with the earlier 11.5:1. The 6500-rpm redline remains unchanged, and all LS6 engines share the same output rating since the optional performance exhaust is discontinued.

A new active center-exit exhaust system is available for 1995 dollars. Its four large outlets allow the engine to deliver a classic American-muscle sound. The system proves worthwhile. Starting the car produces a deep rumble from behind the seats that settles into a notably uneven small-block idle reminiscent of the 7.0-liter C6 Z06. Although stronger and more aggressive than the previous Stingray, the setup offers four selectable volume levels: Stealth, Tour, Sport, and Track. These allow adjustment from quiet to fully open, with the Sport mode providing a satisfying note without excessive drone during steady cruising.

The naturally aspirated LS6 responds immediately to throttle input. It propels the Grand Sport forward with strong low-speed torque while maintaining airflow for continued acceleration up to redline. Although the twin-turbo ZR1 and ZR1X hybrid models draw attention with their rapid pace, the GS remains quick. Equipped with the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic and a shorter 5.56:1 final-drive ratio from the Z06, it should reach 60 mph in approximately 2.7 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in roughly 11.0 seconds during instrumented testing.

Those projections are slightly quicker than the best recorded times for an LT2-powered Stingray and approach the figures of the 670-hp Z06, which achieves 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds. The also-new 721-hp Grand Sport X, which replaces the prior E-Ray, has not yet been evaluated. For drivers wanting additional performance while preserving the LS6's character, its all-wheel-drive hybrid configuration should satisfy.

Balance of Performance

The C8 Corvette platform can generate more than 1.10 g on the skidpad and stop from 70 mph in about 135 feet even with far higher output than the LS6. This indicates ample grip and stability to utilize the new engine fully. Functioning as a milder Z06, the Grand Sport delivers the expected composure, with precise steering, capable brakes, and advanced chassis controls that build speed confidently. Standard magnetorheological adaptive dampers supply both firm wheel control and good ride quality over bumps. The 3.6-inch-wider body accommodates large 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels fitted with 275/30ZR-20 and 345/25ZR-21 tires.

Among numerous available options, the standard all-season tires can be skipped in favor of the 3500-dollar Z52 Sport Performance package. It includes firmer suspension, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, Performance Traction Management, and upgraded Z06-spec brakes with cast-iron rotors. The 20,695-dollar Z52 Track Performance package adds model-specific suspension calibration, the traction system, and stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires. That package also bundles the center-exit exhaust, optional carbon-ceramic brakes for 6000 dollars, and the Carbon Fiber Aero package for 8995 dollars, which supplies a Z06-style rear wing, front dive planes, and lower-body aerodynamic elements. Carbon-fiber wheels are offered separately for 11,995 to 15,500 dollars.

The flat-plane-crank Z06 produces a higher-pitched sound, so the GS's robust engine note serves as its primary distinction. It can also be identified by Grand Sport badges on the sides and twin hash marks on the rear quarters. Optional 10-spoke forged-aluminum wheels are unique to the model. Vehicles equipped with the 1995-dollar Launch Edition package, such as the tested convertible, feature an all-blue interior with red stitching, embossed headrests, and special badges on the steering wheel and between the seats.

Priced from 88,495 dollars (95,495 dollars for the convertible), the Grand Sport costs 15,000 dollars more than a comparable Stingray yet remains more than 30,000 dollars below the Z06. Its 17-mpg EPA combined rating is 1 mpg lower than the base model's, while the claimed top speed of 186 mph trails the Stingray's 200 mph. Buyers focused solely on the latest small-block V-8 may prefer the Stingray and save money. However, the LS6 paired with the Grand Sport's additional equipment forms an appealing combination that stands out.
