The next-generation Lexus ES hybrid is heading to Australia, but the major development is the debut of electric versions of the brand's large sedan.

This marks the first electric ES and the first electric sedan from Lexus overall.

The eighth-generation ES launches in Australia soon, with Lexus targeting arrival in the middle of this year. Electric models come first, followed by the hybrid ES300h later.

Pricing for the entry ES300h Luxury rises by $9460 over the prior version to $75,000 before on-road costs. The electric ES350e Sports Luxury sits just $2000 above that despite added powertrain and equipment.

The dual-motor all-wheel drive ES500e Sports Luxury, the first all-wheel drive ES in Australia, lists at $84,000 before on-road costs.

The new ES uses an updated GA-K platform with added rigidity improvements. Rear suspension switches to a multi-link design for better comfort and refinement.

Lexus has enhanced soundproofing for a quieter cabin experience.

The ES introduces the Arene software platform with greater processing power and expanded over-the-air updates.

The touchscreen grows to 14 inches and now includes climate controls, plus cloud navigation, custom widgets, embedded Spotify, and an improved voice system.

An embedded drive recorder captures exterior camera footage with loop, manual, and incident modes, viewable on the screen.

The digital cluster offers six layout choices including full map view.

Hidden switches on the wheel and console light up on approach.

Safety adds front cross-traffic alert and bicycle detection for rear cross-traffic. A new emergency stop system warns if no inputs occur during adaptive cruise and lane-centring, then stops the car gradually with hazards and unlocks doors while calling emergency services.

Connected emergency features like battery viewing and collision alerts stay free for the vehicle life or until 5G ends. Other remote functions require a paid subscription after five years.

This is the eighth ES generation but sixth sold locally since 1992, skipping earlier variants.

The ES300h uses specific brake sizes while EVs get larger rotors.

Independent testing by ANCAP or Euro NCAP has not occurred yet.
