Sixty years ago, bank robber Willie Sutton was asked why he targeted banks. He answered that was where the cash could be found. For individuals intent on hauling everything they own, no matter how large or who it belongs to, BMW offers a station wagon. The 525i Touring carries a starting price of $39,873, which might mean tapping into resources from others via creative financing.

BMW Touring models first appeared in Europe in 1971 as three-door hatchbacks. Derived from the 1600 and 2002 compact sedans, production ended in 1974, though a five-door 3-series version followed in 1987 and continues today. For the larger North American wagon buyers seeking more space, BMW developed this 5-series-based model. It arrives fully equipped yet looks like a straightforward hauler. Similar to six-cylinder wagons from Mercedes and Volvo, the BMW offers solid but not massive cargo room while delivering a stylish profile.

Modified for its expansive rear glass, the 525i Touring features updated rear doors and windows, expansive wraparound taillights, a roof spoiler to limit lift, and a gently raised roofline with built-in rails for an optional rack system. The distinctive two-panel sunroof offers flexible opening options including front section, rear section, both partially, or vent mode. Extra roof height ensures headroom stays comparable to a standard roof.

The tailgate glass lifts separately for quick loading of smaller or longer items. The full tailgate rises easily thanks to hydraulic struts, though they may need extra help near full open. A rear wiper and washer keep the glass clear. The spare tire sits under the cargo floor to stay clean but proves awkward to access when loaded high. A flip-down toolkit mounts in the tailgate for convenient use during roadside needs.

BMW places its smooth 189-hp, 24-valve, 2.5-liter inline-six up front for strong performance. Results lag behind lighter BMWs due to the wagon's 3787-pound weight and standard four-speed automatic. The 325i sedan, roughly 700 pounds lighter with a five-speed manual, reaches 60 mph in under seven seconds, while this model needs ten seconds. The automatic includes Sport and Manual modes but does not always match the engine's energy as well as manuals do. It helped achieve a 19 mpg average during testing.

Power reaches the rear wheels as in all US BMWs. The independent suspension provides engaging handling, occasionally lively due to the extra 200 pounds over the rear axle. An electronic leveling system manages the load, yet sudden throttle lift in corners can still produce tail-out behavior. Large Pirelli P600 tires deliver 0.78 g grip on the skidpad and stop from 70 mph in 178 feet.

A standout practical touch includes deployable nets from the rear seatbacks that attach to the ceiling, creating a secure area for pets with a clear view.

What more might a savvy buyer seek in a $41,919 escape vehicle? Complimentary fuel, perhaps.
