In June the United States and Iran reached a ceasefire accord under which Tehran agreed in part to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels.

Tehran has privately informed advisers to President Trump that the latest firing on ships was an error and that a rogue group of hardliners sought to derail talks, senior US officials told CBS News.

One official stated to the network that Iranian representatives returned to discussions saying they had made a mistake and wished to continue negotiations.

Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoys Steve Witkoff along with Jared Kushner are scheduled to reach Oman later on Saturday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi is also present in the Gulf state for meetings with Omani authorities.

Past rounds of talks between Washington and Tehran have relied on indirect channels through Pakistani or Qatari intermediaries.

During a Friday briefing US officials said a message had been sent to Iranian leaders via regional mediators calling for a public statement that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and that attacks on commercial ships will cease, according to several media accounts.

One official told Reuters that Iran must provide the statement or face an unfavorable outcome.

The White House further seeks a public Iranian admission that the shooting was a mistake, CBS reports.

Separately a Qatari delegation traveled to Iran on Friday to discuss ways to reduce tensions and improve navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage carrying about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

President Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday that Iran had requested continued talks and that the United States had agreed while making clear the ceasefire had ended.

Early on Saturday Trump also addressed reports of Iranian plans to assassinate him, warning that any such attack would prompt complete destruction of targeted areas in Iran.

The Wall Street Journal and other outlets reported that Israel had shared intelligence about a recent Iranian plot against the US president, though Trump rejected claims of a new scheme or Israeli sourcing of the information and noted he had long been a priority target.

Public calls for Trump death were heard at the funeral of Iran late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli strike on his Tehran residence on 28 February.

On Saturday his son and successor Mojtaba Khamenei issued a written statement declaring that revenge for the killing was inevitable and would occur regardless of who holds office.

Three vessels were hit while following a US advised route through Omani waters early this week in the most serious clash since the June interim agreement. Iran has insisted the only safe route lies through its own waters.

Under the US Iran memorandum both sides must discuss future administration of maritime services in the strait with other Gulf nations.

Iran has proposed that ships pay fees for passage while the United States maintains that transit must stay free.
