US Still Open to Diplomatic Path with Iran if Hormuz Strikes Halt, Rubio Says

The United States continues to seek a diplomatic resolution with Iran, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed reporters on Sunday evening.

"It has to be real," he clarified. "It has to be an agreement that they are prepared to honor.

"Consider this: Iran was expected a week ago to issue a statement confirming the Straits of Hormuz would remain open and that attacks on shipping would cease. Instead, they struck three vessels, I believe last Friday or Saturday. Their actions must shift before we adjust ours."

Rubio also noted an emerging divide in Iran between militant groups targeting the US and others prioritizing the country's economic stability.

"If those seeking productive outcomes for Iran prevail and assume control of the system or negotiations, that would mark a very positive step," he said.

Rubio explained that Iran's economy faces challenges partly because significant resources have been directed toward proxy terror groups.

"Every cent this regime receives, whether from sanctions relief or oil exports, goes into Hezbollah. It goes into Hamas. Billions support militias in Iraq, Hezbollah, and Hamas. Those funds should aid the Iranian people instead. They should build up the nation."

US Offering Global Service in Strait of Hormuz, Rubio Says

Rubio stated that amid ongoing conflict and continued blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, the United States would assume the role of safeguarding global shipping.

"We are essentially delivering protection for these vessels on behalf of the world," he said. "No one else is addressing it."

Therefore, Rubio noted, US President Donald Trump seeks other nations to contribute financially toward the expense of this essential protection.

"The world must determine if it will permit an international waterway to fall under the influence of such a regime," he said of Iran, "which is entirely illegal, unlawful, and unacceptable."
