Diplomacy alone falls short: Iran accord needs to curb Hezbollah power in Lebanon

The developing US-Iran framework could lower the short-term risk of expanded regional conflict. Israel supports effective talks that block Iranian nuclear progress and avert new war zones.

Yet talks must never replace actual security needs. Along the northern frontier this gap matters directly. It separates families returning to places like Metula, Kiryat Shmona, Manara, Shlomi and Galilee communities from another period of vacant roads, closed shops, makeshift classes and suspended lives.

The complete US-Iran text remains unpublished. Reports indicate Israel received no chance to examine terms ahead of signing, even though key parts involve Israeli safety.

Public accounts suggest the draft seeks to halt fighting across fronts including Lebanon. Other details mention reopening the Strait of Hormuz, releasing frozen Iranian assets and wider economic relief for Tehran.

Western officials informed The Jerusalem Post that the plan will shape Israel-Lebanon talks. Earlier trilateral understandings required Hezbollah to pull back from southern Lebanon, surrender weapons and allow Lebanese forces to assume control as Israeli troops departed.

That approach was sound: reinforce the Lebanese government, reduce Hezbollah influence and detach Lebanon from Iranian priorities.

New US-Iran framework may boost Hezbollah leverage

The emerging US-Iran outline could reverse that progress. Folding Lebanon into the Iran process effectively connects Hezbollah outcomes to Tehran bargaining power. Iranian voices and Hezbollah allies already frame Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon as the next phase of US-Iran talks.

The risk is clear: Israel northern frontier turns into another bargaining item in an agreement where local residents hold no seat at the table.

Israel need not reject all diplomatic moves. The country requires US partnership, stable regional ties and genuine efforts to build a sovereign Lebanon able to control its territory. Genuine replacement of Hezbollah south of the Litani by Lebanese forces serves Israeli interests.

Still, optimism cannot replace security tools. A ceasefire that leaves Hezbollah armed, politically stronger and shielded by Iranian support offers no lasting answer. It merely postpones costs that northern communities will eventually face.

Northern residents have already paid heavily for short-term quiet. Since October 7 they have faced displacement, rocket and drone attacks, damaged homes, failing local economies and uncertainty over safe return. This reflects both military and civic shortcomings.

Longstanding underinvestment in the North, weak emergency planning and tolerance for border insecurity created a gradual emptying of Galilee areas. Residents depart because they cannot plan futures around alerts. Businesses close because instability blocks growth. Communities meant to show national strength instead highlight neglect.

Israel must insist on full Hezbollah removal

This pattern is familiar yet gains new weight today. When an international plan appears to value regional calm over ending Hezbollah threats, residents again hear calls to wait longer, trust further and settle for weaker outcomes.

Israel must reject that path. A sound Israeli stance stays firm without excess risk. Any deal requires clear, verifiable steps for Hezbollah withdrawal and disarmament, a reliable Lebanese or international presence and explicit confirmation that Israel keeps the right to counter immediate dangers. It must block Iran from swapping Lebanese stability for nuclear gains or expect citizens to return on promises Hezbollah has ignored.

Israel should back diplomacy that genuinely improves northern safety while opposing steps that only quiet the threat temporarily.

Northern communities require more than statements. They need protection, rebuilding, responsibility and a border secure enough for safe return.
