The United States carried out fresh strikes on Iran on Sunday evening, extending the recent series of exchanges between the two nations. Iranian state media indicated that the attacks resulted in one death in southwestern Iran along with four injuries.

Hours after the latest US action, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated it had targeted American military facilities in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain.

These mounting strikes raise questions about the interim US-Iran accord reached in June, occurring alongside disputes over access to the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran announced the closure of this vital passage until further notice, but the US maintains that it remains operational.

Centcom confirmed the Sunday evening strikes on Iran, which began at 17:00 ET (22:00 BST).

The operation hit numerous Iranian military sites such as air-defense systems, coastal radar installations, and missile and drone facilities, according to later statements.

US forces stood ready to protect navigation rights for commercial vessels amid Iran's ongoing aggression, harassment, threats and unilateral claims, Centcom noted.

Just before the Centcom statement, Iranian state television reported blasts in Sirik, Qeshm, Bandar Abbas and Jask.

IRNA cited the deputy governor for security and law enforcement in Khuzestan province, Valiollah Hayati, stating that one person was killed and four others injured following the American strikes on Monday morning.

Oil prices rose sharply in Asian markets on Monday. Brent crude increased 4.3 percent to $79.26 (59.22 pounds) per barrel, and US-traded oil also gained 4.3 percent reaching $74.50.

Global wholesale energy prices have fluctuated significantly in recent months due to trader responses to conflict developments.

After US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February, Tehran restricted the Strait of Hormuz, a route handling about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Despite recent increases, prices remain far below the over $120 per barrel peak for Brent seen at the end of April.

The Sunday evening US strikes followed earlier action against 140 Iranian military targets, as Centcom reported on Saturday evening.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps countered with broad attacks on US bases and regional allies, heightening the intensity of the conflict.

Iran struck Qatar, involved in ceasefire mediation and untouched since April, plus the UAE, which had avoided attacks since May. The BBC sought comment from US Central Command regarding an incident in Jordan.

The renewed exchanges threaten the interim ceasefire deal from last month, intended to restore strait access and lead to a lasting resolution.

US President Donald Trump stated earlier this week that Iranian actions ended the ceasefire, while Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of breaching the agreement.

Trump indicated that discussions would proceed, with mediators working to restart the process.

On Sunday, US Central Command reaffirmed that the Strait remains open and that American forces are positioned to keep it accessible.
