Donald Trump has hit back at critics of his ceasefire agreement with Iran, declaring at the G7 summit that he stands ready to resume military strikes while stressing that the accord imposes no financial burden on the United States.

Simultaneously, he endorsed a collective G7 statement that welcomes the ceasefire yet calls for a subsequent pact to curb Iran’s ballistic missile activities, a topic left untouched in the memorandum scheduled for signing on Friday.

The G7 declaration notes that future discussions would gain from broader participation by regional and global players, including the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA.

Trump faces mounting pressure, even from some domestic allies, over a conflict with Iran that concluded in a negotiated settlement falling short of many initial goals.

During a bilateral session at the French-hosted G7 gathering in Évian-les-Bains on Wednesday, he vowed that any Iranian misconduct would prompt him to “resume bombing right in the center of their operations”.

He firmly dismissed suggestions that Washington would contribute to a $300bn reconstruction fund for Iran, though he stopped short of denying the fund’s existence and indicated that contributions from Gulf nations would hinge on Tehran’s conduct.

“Any country is free to invest if it chooses,” he remarked. “We are not committing a single cent.”

He continued that others could pursue such investments, adding that Gulf states would likely withhold funds until Iran demonstrates reliable behavior.

Defending the agreement and positioning himself as tougher on Iran than predecessors, Trump asserted that market forces strongly favored the outcome.

He warned that without the deal, global economic turmoil would ensue because the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed amid ongoing threats to shipping.

Trump noted that oil prices had already declined and were expected to drop further below pre-conflict levels.

The G7 call for expanded talks on Iran’s missiles and regional proxies is expected to face rejection in Tehran, which has dealt solely with Washington and views European involvement as marginal.

Iran is also anticipated to oppose Franco-British proposals for a naval escort taskforce in the Strait of Hormuz, despite G7 endorsement.

Regarding Ukraine, G7 members praised recent battlefield gains and urged intensified sanctions plus further arms supplies to Kyiv.

The Évian-les-Bains summit, led by Emmanuel Macron, convenes leaders from the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Canada and Japan.

The joint statement signals Trump’s willingness to address allied concerns on Iran and Ukraine despite his unilateral approach elsewhere.

Leaders described the timing as appropriate for additional steps following Trump’s deal to reopen the strait.

The agreement restores maritime access, reaffirms Iran’s stance against nuclear arms, and defers decisions on its enriched uranium stockpile, which Trump indicated could be handled under IAEA oversight inside Iran.

The memorandum provides for immediate removal of US sanctions on Iranian oil exports and related sectors alongside creation of the large reconstruction fund.

G7 members called the pact a historic chance to block Iranian nuclear weapons and address regional threats, expressing readiness to support implementation.

They underscored unrestricted transit rights in the strait and backed the French-British maritime initiative to restore safe shipping.

The statement advocated a broader follow-on accord beyond the current memorandum to secure lasting regional stability.

European exclusion from US-Iran talks has drawn criticism over the limited American team’s capacity compared with Iranian negotiators.

The G7 text also pushes for stronger economic measures against Russia, marking the first time Trump has joined such a collective declaration, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hailed as a significant shift.

To sustain progress in Ukraine, members committed to boosting air defenses, long-range systems and production licenses while tightening sanctions on Russian energy exports.
