In the Middle East the path to any pact typically involves smoke, fire, statements, denials, leaks, and private calls that participants prefer not to detail.

The Hormuz event supplied Trump with a straightforward reason for a strike that the public could readily grasp.

A US Apache helicopter went down near a critical shipping lane. Two crew members were saved. Trump held Iran responsible and ordered strikes.

Strikes Presented Clearly to Public

The White House found it simple to justify the action. A president who prefers peace cannot issue repeated warnings, observe a helicopter loss near Hormuz, and reply only with statements of worry. Trump noted that Iran had delayed talks too long and would face consequences. He also mentioned a strong response if no deal emerges.

While an Iranian aircraft may have collided with the helicopter, the situation remains under review and intent is unconfirmed per Iranian accounts. This point is relevant because Trump framed it as deliberate aggression by Tehran despite less clear operational facts.

This reflects his pattern of raising the tone, sending aircraft, and keeping room for talks. He avoids extended conflicts especially with midterm elections near. Fuel costs touch every American home and his pledge was to conclude wars and reach accords rather than create another regional entanglement.

One notable detail Trump shared involved oil tankers rather than bombs. He described secret US assistance in moving over 100 million barrels through Hormuz on 22 vessels that traveled at night without lights after Iranian radar was impaired. Even allowing for typical exaggeration a key reality stands out that nearly every element of the crisis centers on Hormuz including oil trade energy prices and political pressure on the White House. Any interruption registers swiftly in Washington.

This explains why Americans keep engaging with Iranians after the strikes. Qatar again serves as intermediary between talks and strike zones.

Strikes and Negotiations Proceed Together

Both sides conduct strikes while mediators stay active. This is no longer standard diplomacy. It is talks carried out amid military statements and social media posts between refueling flights and calls in Doha. This is Trump method and many now accept the approach.

Those seeking clear logic here will find none. Trump wants Iran to sense time is short yet not end talks. Iran wants to appear unbowed without triggering major attack. Qatar seeks to stay essential. Gulf states want tankers moving. Europe avoids oil prices like those of the 1970s. Israel wants the US to complete the task though Washington defines completion differently.

Iran shows no sign of yielding. Tehran leadership has taken hits yet such regimes often grow firmer under pressure. They seek outside foes unite internally and raise the cost of any compromise.

Uranium Remains Key for Israel but May Slip in US Focus

The IAEA Board of Governors recent call for Iran to declare its enriched uranium stockpile and permit checks adds real pressure. The measure passed 21 to three with 10 abstentions.

The IAEA reported Iran held 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent before the strikes. For Israel this is the central issue. In Trump drive for a deal and public moment it risks being sidelined.

Trump will not allow Netanyahu to set his own schedule. The Israeli leader views Iran as his career project and a major political asset. Trump sees Iran as a matter to close before it drains his term and midterm prospects.

As long as force advances Trump diplomatic aims the gaps stay manageable. Once talks turn to the extent and duration of pressure the president reminds Jerusalem who defines the limits.

That is why calm on the Lebanon front aligns with the wider US effort on Iran. From Washington every extra front adds noise. If an Israeli Beirut strike gives Tehran reason to exit talks Americans will urge Jerusalem to hold back. From Israel view this is frustrating and at times risky. Hezbollah does not vanish because Trump wants quiet. Yet when Washington pursues an Iran accord Lebanon becomes a place where Israel must accept more than it prefers.

The question is what Trump aims to achieve. If the target is a limited pact reopening Hormuz cutting attacks gaining a general nuclear pledge and keeping oversight then success is possible. Iran needs economic relief. Gulf states seek stability. Trump wants a photo preferably with a bold statement a broad smile and minimal missiles visible.

If the aim is a deeper fix covering the nuclear program uranium stockpiles missiles proxies and Iran rebuild capacity the path is longer. Hitting a radar site or air defense unit will not suffice. It would need strict verification access to sites schedules automatic sanctions and above all US willingness to stay focused on Iran after the cameras leave.

This is exactly where Israel fears Trump. He enjoys the big announcement moment. The detailed follow up work of monitoring timelines and technical terms has never been his strength.

US Administration Split on Next Steps

Even the US administration lacks full unity. Some view strikes as short term leverage toward an accord. Others contend any deal would simply let Iran recover.

Security officials grasp how fast a Hormuz incident could grow into an attack on a US base ship or global energy markets. Republican politicians already consider November and how to present voters with strength without war action without casualties and fuel prices that do not turn a geopolitical win into electoral loss.

Tehran makes similar calculations from the opposite side. Iranian leaders know Trump wants a deal and avoids long war. They also see that even without closing the strait merely threatening navigation can unsettle markets and press Washington. Iran need not defeat the US Navy. It only needs to show that pressure efforts carry costs for all.

This creates Israel dilemma. A modest accord may suit America markets Gulf states and Trump. It may harm Israel if it leaves Iran damaged but not eliminated weakened yet still holding unaccounted uranium. More cautious perhaps yet also persuaded that the war lesson is the need for a strategic safeguard sooner.

Israel sees this risk clearly. The threat does not vanish because an American president claims to have resolved it.

For Netanyahu options are limited. He can praise Trump share reports of coordination and claim US pressure supports the Israeli line. In practice he relies on the American president more than he wishes. Trump enables Israeli action and can also curb it with one call.

There is irony here. The American president often seen as Netanyahu closest ally is also the one most ready to restrain him when White House needs require it.

Four Possible Paths Ahead

The four main scenarios are fairly clear.

The first and most probable is ongoing limited strikes paired with intense talks. Another target another warning another Qatari envoy another defiant Iranian statement to protect national pride.

The second is a deadly incident with Americans an attack on a base ship or personnel that would demand a much larger reply.

The third is talks breaking down and a return to open regional war with Israel directly engaged and its civilians again bearing the cost.

The fourth and most concerning from Jerusalem view is success that arrives too fast an accord that eases Hormuz lowers oil prices gives Trump a win and defers the nuclear issue.

In that case Israel would need to act quietly but firmly. Avoid public clashes with Trump. Do not seem to undermine an American deal. Do not supply Iran a reason to exit talks. At the same time it would need to use every channel to ensure any accord goes beyond clearing a traffic issue in Hormuz.

The routine details will decide the outcome. Where is the uranium. Who checks it. When is it checked. What if Iran refuses. Who reapplies sanctions. What is left of Iran missile force.
