US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States will likely assume control of the Strait of Hormuz and should receive payment for managing the key waterway.

"We plan to retain the strait and probably operate it. We will serve as its protector. Perhaps we will refer to ourselves as the guardian angel of the strait. And we should receive compensation for these efforts," he remarked during a phone interview on Fox News's "Fox and Friends" program. "We are taking charge of the strait. They have nothing."

"We will guard it. We will be paid for guarding it - a substantial sum," he continued. "We will be reimbursed, since the other nations are quite wealthy. They support our position, and we should not be expected to provide this service without return."

Trump noted that the US should have addressed the Iranian threat "47 years ago," adding that the two sides had reached agreement on "everything" during an 11-hour session in Washington before Iran requested modifications.

He further stated that Iran "launched a drone at a ship" within an hour after talks ended.

Trump: Iran 'received nothing from me'

"Everything takes 11 hours with these individuals," Trump said. "You know, you cannot resolve matters in one sentence, one hour and one minute. It should take one minute. And everything was settled yesterday. Then they exit the room, call back, and say we need to make a few adjustments."

"We will not accept adjustments," he added. "Always adjustments. They are simply professional negotiators. That is all they do. I do not even consider them skilled at it. They have received nothing; they have nothing from me. But looking back 47 years, they have been stringing leaders along. Every president was drawn in, took no action, and Iran grew stronger and stronger."

President Trump observed that Iran is getting its "a** kicked," underscoring the impact of US strikes on Iranian military hardware, personnel, and leadership.

Hormuz Strait stays open, US to charge 20 percent fee, says Trump

"The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

"We are reinstating the IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it only prevents Iran's ships or customers from entering or leaving. The U.S.A. will be known from this point forward as 'THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT.'"

In the post, the president said he will enforce a 20 percent reimbursement rate on all cargo shipped to cover the cost of security in the Strait of Hormuz.
