US President Donald Trump stated that new discussions with Iran would start on Monday after he canceled what he described as potentially large-scale strikes on the nation.

"They understood the scale of the planned action because they observed preparations underway," he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. "We are engaging them through negotiations that begin tomorrow afternoon."

In a prior Truth Social post, Trump noted that Iran along with US partners in the region had requested he pause any strikes since the outlines of an agreement had been settled.

Iran's foreign ministry indicated no arrangements exist to host a US team or dispatch officials to Washington. Previous discussions relied on third-party mediators.

The president has often declared that a negotiated resolution to the conflict is imminent only for exchanges of strikes to continue.

During his Air Force One comments, Trump avoided setting a firm timeline for reaching an accord with Tehran and remarked: "We will assess the situation as it develops. We can proceed whenever necessary... I have no desire to cause loss of life."

Trump noted that Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman along with partners including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had pressed him to avoid weekend strikes.

"We stood ready to proceed," Trump said. "They requested a pause because they believe an agreement exists," he added. "A pact covers Hormuz and another will address nuclear matters."

Global oil prices dropped on Monday morning in Asian markets following the announcement. Brent Crude fell 4.5 percent to $83.98 (62.26 pounds) while US-traded oil declined 4.6 percent to $80.74 (59.85 pounds).

Energy costs have varied since the conflict began on 28 February as markets responded to interruptions in Strait of Hormuz shipping.

Roughly 20 percent of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes through the strait.

Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency rejected claims that Tehran had asked the US to delay further action and labeled Trump's statements as fresh fabrications.

On Sunday Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that talks with Oman regarding a Hormuz agreement were advancing toward completion according to local reports.

The president has not specified the location or participants for Monday's discussions.

In his Air Force One remarks Trump described the canceled strikes as potentially the largest since World War II and warned they could have ended chances for a negotiated peace after months of fighting.

Trump did not address whether energy sites in Iran were targeted despite warnings from legal experts that such actions might violate international law.

Iran's acting Defence Minister Majid Ibn al-Reza stated that every threat from adversaries is treated as genuine even when part of information campaigns.

"We will avoid surprise and will not stay inactive," he said.

The president has issued stark warnings to Tehran before later emphasizing that diplomacy remains an option.

In his Saturday post he said the US stood prepared for action against Iran at levels of force unseen since World War II.

He added that canceling the operation would serve the world's long-term interests and support Iran's continued success.

On 7 April the president warned that an entire civilization could perish if Iran rejected peace efforts and he also threatened damage to civilian facilities and power supplies.

Those statements led to direct talks in Pakistan led by Vice-President JD Vance though no agreement followed.

The administration has largely set aside polling data indicating broad public opposition to the war and its economic effects including among Republicans.

Surveys revealing discontent over war management have raised concerns among some conservative analysts ahead of November midterms.
