Iranian Females Face Suicide and Honor Killings After Telegram Channel Exposures

Multiple teenage girls and young women across Iran have died by suicide or in honor killings after their images were shared on a Telegram channel that included accusations about their personal conduct, based on reports from Iranian media and legal groups.

During the past week two girls in Lorestan province died by suicide following the unauthorized release of their photos on the channel. The newspaper Sharq noted that several additional individuals attempted suicide after their images were posted without permission.

Weeks prior a 16-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman were reported to have died in separate cases connected to claims on the same channel. An informed source informed IranWire that the image of the young woman was simply a standard photo taken from her public Instagram account.

One of the 16-year-old victims known as Esma was interred at Khazar Cemetery without a traditional ceremony and with only a small group of relatives and friends present contrary to local practices according to the advocacy network Dadbaan.

Women in Lorestan Kermanshah and West Azerbaijan provinces have faced extortion demands from the channel operators who reportedly sought payment to delete the posts.

Besides the suicides and attempts Sharq documented at least one honor killing connected to the channel. Attorney Fereshteh Tabanian stated online that a young girl was killed by her father after a post appeared about her.

IranWire reported additional consequences including one woman losing her employment another being forced from her home by her husband and a third having her engagement ended.

Channel Actions Linked to Multiple Tragedies

From a criminological view this situation shows how cyber violence combined with social stigma and cultural ideas of honor can cause serious mental harm to victims especially adolescents. Stopping similar events requires prosecution of those responsible along with better mental health support digital education and efforts against victim blaming Dadbaan stated.

IranWire citing a source indicated that student groups at universities in Khorramabad and Borujerd were initially targeted. The issue worsened when some people submitted photos of others out of personal conflicts along with offensive captions.

The channel first presented itself as punishing regime honeytraps yet it also focused on those labeled enemies of the state and pro-regime individuals IranWire reported.

Activists Highlight Misogyny in Online Abuse

Lawyer and activist Samaneh Sawadi based in the United Kingdom told DW Persian that this represents cybercrime and a breach of privacy yet the perpetrators understood the cultural setting. They exploited misogynistic attitudes and cultural elements that pushed some women toward suicide or withdrawal from social media and online spaces.

When society stops viewing the presence of women as inherently wrong it will cease using such methods to marginalize them. Reporting the channels is possible but new ones will appear. The root lies in a context where families treat daughters as property and view their bodies and social choices as their own she added.

Authorities Detain Three Operators Search for Fourth

Although police and judicial officials promised action some reports indicate that the Telegram channels remain active and many complaints have not been addressed. The Lorestan prosecutors office stated that three operators were identified and arrested by police with efforts continuing to locate a fourth suspect.
