Tammuz 1, 2199 (1560 BCE):

The birth of Joseph, son of the patriarch Jacob and his beloved wife Rachel, who became the forefather of one of the Twelve Tribes. Tradition also marks this as the date of his passing in 2309. His tomb in Shechem remained a site for pilgrimage and prayer until Arab crowds destroyed it during the Second Intifada.

June 17:

Birthdays of François Jacob (1920), a French biologist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1965 for showing how enzyme levels in cells are controlled via transcription regulation; and George Akerlof (1940), an American economist who earned the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics for identifying major issues in markets with asymmetric information.

Tammuz 3, 5754 (1994):

Yahrzeit of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the seventh and final Lubavitcher Rebbe. He guided the Chabad movement from 1950 until his death, greatly broadening its reach and establishing a global network of centers to share Judaism with Jews everywhere.

June 19:

Birthdays of two additional Nobel recipients: Sir Ernst Chain (1906), honored with the 1945 Nobel Prize in Medicine for developing methods to purify and mass-produce penicillin, launching the antibiotic era that transformed modern medicine; and Aage Bohr (1922), who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975. He and his father Niels form one of four father-son pairs to win the Nobel in Physics.

Tammuz 5, 3258 (502 BCE):

Ezekiel received his initial prophecy (Ezekiel 1:2). The book bearing his name addresses the Babylonian exile following the First Temple's destruction and features rich symbolism along with visions. He is thought to be interred in Iraq.

June 21, 1948:

The Altalena vessel arrived off the Tel Aviv coast with over 800 new immigrants and arms. The Irgun asserted an accord allowing 20 percent of the weapons for its members defending Jerusalem.

Former prime minister David Ben-Gurion rejected what he viewed as an ultimatum and directed fire on the ship, resulting in 18 deaths and 10 injuries. The event nearly sparked civil war, averted only after former prime minister Menachem Begin delivered a passionate radio address that evening urging no arms against fellow Jews.

June 22, 1906:

Birthday of Billy Wilder, the Austrian-born American film director, screenwriter, and producer whose Hollywood career lasted more than five decades. Gifted and adaptable, he secured Academy Awards as producer, director, and screenwriter. Wilder guided 14 actors to Oscar-nominated roles and received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in 1986, the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award in 1988, and the National Medal of Arts in 1993.

June 23, 1700:

King William III bestowed knighthood on financier Solomon de Medina - the first Jew so recognized, and the last for another 137 years.

June 24, 1914:

Birthday of Jan Karski, Polish resistance fighter and activist honored by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations for informing the Western Allies about Nazi atrocities and the extermination of European Jewry. He who does not condemn, acquiesces.

Tammuz 10, 3174 (586 BCE):

After rising against Babylonian authority, King Zedekiah was seized while fleeing via a tunnel from the city amid Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 39:4-5). He was compelled to watch the killing of his sons before his eyes were put out and he was led into Babylonian captivity.

June 26, 1936:

Judith Haspel, a 17-year-old from Vienna who held every Austrian women's middle- and long-distance freestyle record in 1935, sent a letter to the Austrian Swimming Association protesting Hitler and declining to represent Austria at the 1936 Summer Olympics, declaring, I refuse to enter a contest in a land which so shamefully persecutes my people.

June 27, 1967:

Israel enacted a Basic Law safeguarding all holy places: The Holy Places shall be protected from desecration and any other violation and from anything likely to violate the freedom of access of the members of the different religions to the places sacred to them or their feelings with regard to those places.

June 28, 1967:

Israel incorporated the Old City of Jerusalem and reunited it with the new city.

June 29, 1946:

Roughly 20,000-25,000 British security personnel from the Mandatory government raided the Jewish Agency, searched 27 Jewish settlements for arms, detained 2,718 individuals, and killed four Jews in the operation known as Black Sabbath.

Tammuz 15, 5503 (1743):

Yahrzeit of Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar, a Torah scholar and mystic famed for his biblical commentary titled Ohr HaChaim. Born in Morocco, he earned his living as a silversmith. Numerous accounts describe his piety and miracles. He later relocated to Italy and spent his final years in Israel. His grave on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem draws many pilgrims and prayers.

July 1, 1908:

Birthday of Estée Lauder (Josephine Esther Mentzer), recognized by Time magazine among the 100 most influential business figures of the century for growing her cosmetics firm into the world's largest family-owned beauty enterprise.

Start of the three-week semi-mourning period for the temples' destruction, culminating on the ninth of Av. The fast also recalls five tragic occurrences on this date.

July 3, 1883:

Birthday of Franz Kafka, the Czech author who portrayed modern humanity's anxiety-filled isolation in a baffling, hostile, and indifferent world. As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect (The Metamorphosis).

July 4, 1976:

Israeli commandos executed a bold and dramatic rescue at Uganda's Entebbe airport under Lt.-Col. Yonatan Netanyahu (brother of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), freeing 256 hostages from an Air France plane seized by Palestinian terrorists. This total included the flight crew, who all elected to remain with the Jewish captives rather than accept release. The United Nations naturally condemned Israel for breaching Ugandan sovereignty. Yonatan Netanyahu was sadly slain during the mission.

July 5, 1950:

The Knesset approved the Law of Return, assuring every Jew the unconditional right to settle in Israel. The Citizenship Law, passed alongside it, automatically confers Israeli citizenship on every Jewish immigrant.

July 6, 1938:

The Evian Conference opened in France to explore solutions for the Jewish refugee crisis amid rising Nazi persecution. Delegates from all 33 nations rejected accepting Jews, thus sealing their fate under the Nazis. The German government replied that it was astounding foreign countries criticized Germany over its handling of Jews yet none wished to admit them when the opportunity offered.

Tammuz 22, 5648 (1888):

Yahrzeit of the Maid of Ludomir, who had a vision and began giving learned Torah lectures from her room to hassidim gathered outside - the sole independent female rebbe in hassidic history.

July 8, 1967:

The Spanish cabinet endorsed legislation granting religious freedom to Spain's Jews and other minorities. Since 1492, practicing Judaism had been officially banned in Spain.

July 9, 1840:

Following the first coordinated protest by American Jewry across major cities against the Damascus blood libel, US president Martin Van Buren pressured Syria, leading to the eventual release of the remaining survivors.

July 10, 1969:

Egyptian commandos crossed the Suez Canal in small boats and assaulted the Israeli position on the East Bank, killing seven, wounding five, and taking others captive. This signaled the formal start of the War of Attrition, which claimed thousands of lives and injuries on both sides until the August 1970 ceasefire.

July 11, 1797:

The gates of the Jewish ghetto in Venice, Italy, were removed.

July 12, 2006:

Hezbollah forces entered Israel from Lebanon and ambushed two IDF vehicles, killing three soldiers and seizing two others. Israeli forces responded by shelling Lebanese territory, initiating the Second Lebanon War. The conflict concluded after 34 days with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Roughly 2,000 Lebanese and 159 Israelis perished, and civilian infrastructure on both sides suffered extensive damage.

July 13, 1930:

Birthday of Naomi Shemer, Israeli musician and songwriter celebrated as the first lady of Israeli song and poetry. Her 1967 composition Jerusalem of Gold became an unofficial second national anthem after Israel secured victory in the Six Day War and reunified Jerusalem.

July 14, 1900:

Birthday of Samuel Ruben, American inventor who secured over 200 patents and advanced electrochemistry and solid-state technology, including the establishment of Duracell batteries.
