Joshua’s agents came back filled with trust and assurance, offering an enduring message on bravery, intent, and the territory of Israel.

The reading for Parashat Shelach, drawn from the second chapter of the Book of Joshua (verses 1-24), recounts a gripping tale.

With the Jewish people ready to cross into the Promised Land following four decades of desert wandering, Joshua sends two agents to examine Jericho. They meet Rahab, who endangers herself to protect them and ultimately aids Israel’s successful arrival in the Land.

At first sight, the link to Parashat Shelach stands clear. Just as Moses dispatched agents into the Land of Israel, Joshua repeats the action. Yet the parallels only highlight a deep difference.

The agents sent by Moses - except for Joshua and Caleb - came back anxious and discouraged. Instead of seeing the Land of Israel as a Divine offering to be welcomed, they noticed only barriers and threats. Their absence of belief misled the nation, dooming a whole generation to perish in the wilderness. Joshua’s agents, however, return with assurance and resolve.

“The Lord has handed the whole Land over to us,” they state (Joshua 2:24). Where the first agents noticed giants, these agents noticed chance. Where the prior generation stumbled, the following generation stood ready to move.

A contest of belief, outlook and national aim

The message holds as true now as it did more than 3,000 years ago. The contest over Eretz Yisrael has never been only a military or political fight. At its heart, it tests belief, outlook, and national aim.

Some view the Land and notice only hardships. Others view the same hills and valleys and notice the progress of God’s pledge.

The haftarah calls on us to take Joshua’s view rather than that of the agents in the Torah reading. Indeed, God had already informed Joshua, “Every spot on which the bottom of your foot shall step I have granted to you” (Joshua 1:3). The Land is not just ground. It is a legacy, a holy charge given to the Jewish people.

For nearly 2,000 years, Jews never gave up that charge. But our forebears did not long only for shelter. They yearned for a homeland. They hoped not just for endurance but for return. Thank God, much of that hope has turned real.

The State of Israel has thrived beyond what earlier generations could have pictured. Barren scenes have turned into lively settlements, Hebrew has risen again as a spoken tongue, and millions of Jews have come home.

Yet the task stays incomplete. Large sections of the biblical core - the exact areas where Abraham tread - still face global demands. Too often, the world treats Judea and Samaria as if they were alien, yet these are the spots where Jewish history took shape.

The haftarah recalls that the generation which entered the Land prevailed because it held clear intent. Joshua’s agents grasped that the issue was not if the job would be hard, but if the Jewish people would find the nerve to complete their task.

That test has not faded. Settling every part of Eretz Yisrael is not only a question of numbers or safety. It shows the grasp that Jewish history did not start in 1948 and that our claims do not rest on the nod of outside powers.

The generation of the wilderness let dread form its path and paid a heavy cost. The generation led by Joshua picked belief over dread and shifted the path of history.

As we read this week’s haftarah, the query before us remains the same: Will we see the Land of Israel through the lens of doubt or through the lens of fate? The Land waits for its children. The sole query is whether we hold the outlook and drive to heed its summons.
