Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and First Lady Fardowsa Mohamed Roble will reach Israel on Sunday for a historic state visit that launches a new phase in ties between the countries.

This marks the first such trip by a Somaliland leader and the first since Israel officially recognized Somaliland's independence in December 2025.

Abdullahi had intended to conduct his initial official trip to Israel at the close of March, as noted in earlier reports citing informed sources.

Still, this journey follows a prior private trip to Israel during preliminary diplomatic efforts that resulted in formal recognition last December.

The agenda features the inauguration of Somaliland's embassy in Jerusalem together with multiple official meetings focused on advancing collaboration in security, commerce, water solutions, clean energy, and area growth.

The president and first lady will be greeted in a formal ceremony by President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog at the President's Residence in Jerusalem at 11:30 a.m.

Afterward, Abdullahi will hold diplomatic discussions with Herzog and join a state lunch with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar.

The day continues with a wreath-laying at Mount Herzl, a stop at Yad Vashem, and a tree-planting event with Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund at the Grove of Nations.

Sunday ends with a dinner involving top figures from Israel's business sector, underscoring mutual goals to strengthen economic links.

Somaliland Embassy in Jerusalem Opens Monday

On Monday, Abdullahi will conduct talks with Sa'ar before meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The visit's centerpiece occurs Monday evening with the embassy opening, which formalizes full diplomatic relations after Israel's recognition of Somaliland sovereignty.

Officials indicate Abdullahi will stay in Israel until Thursday for sessions with ministers, officials, and business executives.

Plans also include visits to the Knesset and the Nova music festival memorial, plus talks with Israeli firms in water management and renewable energy.

Advocates for stronger bonds note that partnership could boost economic progress, sea security, and tech advances while expanding Somaliland's global connections.
