Iranians shouted slogans calling for the deaths of prominent US and Israeli figures during the second day of national mourning for former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, according to local media reports on Sunday.

Large crowds assembled at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran to honor the deceased as the extended week of ceremonies progressed.

Three sons of the late Ayatollah stood in prayer beside his coffin along with those of four relatives on Sunday, though Mojtaba, who took over as supreme leader, stayed away. State outlets indicated that senior clerics would conduct the prayers instead.

Khamenei died in February amid the initial attacks of Operation Roaring Lion.

The funeral, postponed because of active conflict, opened on Saturday with repeated calls against America and Israel, and the observances are set to continue for at least seven days at multiple sites nationwide.

Broadcast images displayed the coffin covered by the national flag and his black turban resting atop it. The caskets of Khamenei and his family members were arranged on a large black platform shaped like the Kaaba in Mecca.

Many mourners wept or beat their chests while gathering at the Mosalla, including through the night. The metro system recorded seven million journeys from late Saturday into Sunday morning as visitors converged on the area.

Officials intend to organize large processions in the days ahead and will supply transport, meals and accommodation for participants.

Additional footage from state sources captured chants of revenge and threats against those responsible for the leader's death.

Successor Mojtaba Khamenei Absent Amid Security Concerns

The body will travel next to Qom, Najaf and Kerbala, important Shiite locations in Iran and Iraq, before final burial on Thursday in Mashhad at the nation's most revered shrine.

Reports indicated Mojtaba stayed away because of concerns over possible attacks during the public events.

State television showed brothers Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud Khamenei praying near the coffins in the expansive courtyard of the Tehran complex.

No public images or appearances of Mojtaba have occurred since the February 28 strike that killed his father and relatives when Israeli and US forces targeted Iranian sites at the war's outset.

Accounts from those near his circle described facial injuries and serious harm to one or both legs.

Iranian Commander Issues Warning Against Disruptions at Funeral

In a Friday statement, Khatam al-Anbiya commander Ali Abdollahi cautioned Israel and the United States against any interference during the mourning period and promised strong retaliation if provoked.

Khatam al-Anbiya serves as the joint military command for Iran.

The remarks followed an unscheduled display of the coffin in Tehran on Thursday, shown by state broadcaster IRIB.

IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi appeared publicly for the first time since the conflict began, standing with other officials beside the coffin.
