US Rejects Israeli Plan to Shift Military Aircraft from Ben-Gurion as Parking Issues Persist

The standoff regarding American refueling aircraft stationed at Ben-Gurion Airport, once viewed as resolved, is now worsening and shifting from military channels into diplomatic discussions.

Although the Transportation Ministry stated Wednesday that an agreement had been finalized to move the United States assets to alternate locations following warnings from the Israel Airports Authority about potential disruptions to commercial flights, US military sources indicated Thursday that the suggested options fall short of Pentagon standards.

Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to handle the matter directly.

The requirement for US use of the airport arises from preparations for major regional contingencies, such as strikes on American facilities in the Persian Gulf, where Israeli logistical backing would become essential.

Even with possible force reductions under discussion, the US military insists on staying at the airport and seeks to expand its footprint ahead of potential emergencies involving Tehran, with the final call now elevated to top political leaders.

US Military Officials State Alternative Sites Fall Short

A senior US military source close to the matter noted that American representatives informed the IDF Planning Directorate the offered locations proved inadequate.

The source explained that other Israeli sites suggested for relocation are overly congested and fail to meet safety and operational criteria set by the Pentagon, hindering rapid response capabilities from a standing start. Consequently, US representatives stressed the necessity of remaining at Ben-Gurion Airport.

This standoff follows ongoing friction between the Transportation Ministry and defense officials.

US Aircraft Presence Disrupts Civilian Flight Schedules

Transportation Minister Miri Regev had earlier called for removal of the refueling aircraft and a cap at twenty units to avoid interference with civilian departures during peak summer travel.

The IDF, supported by Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, resisted proposals to transfer the planes to air bases in the Negev.

With rising threats from Tehran, the American stance has transformed the parking dispute into a diplomatic matter now requiring prime ministerial attention.
