In a crowded valley beneath the ancient walls of Jerusalem's Old City, recent weeks have seen the ground tremble from the operation of jackhammers and bulldozers.

Such noises have echoed across Jerusalem for years as Israeli authorities work to impose a uniform Jewish character on the occupied eastern sector while diminishing its Palestinian features.

Usually municipal crews handle the heavy machinery, yet in the al-Bustan district near the 11th-century al-Aqsa mosque the activity stems from a newer pattern.

Palestinians are now tearing down their own family residences.

"This feels extremely difficult and painful," Jalal al-Tawil remarked while observing a hired tractor equipped with a front loader and jackhammer dismantle the final sections of the house his father constructed on the site of his grandparents' former dwelling.

By midweek most walls had been reduced to foundations and debris gathered into one heap. Al-Tawil saved the thick root of a 35-year-old grapevine for last.

"It once supplied grapes to the entire al-Bustan neighborhood," he noted. Fresh spring leaves had appeared on the trellis overhead, yet he accepted they would never produce fruit again.

Demolishing his family's home and heritage left al-Tawil exhausted, but harsh financial realities dictated the choice. The Jerusalem municipality warned that its crews would charge 280,000 shekels (about 72,000 pounds) for the work, while hiring private equipment and workers would cost less than one-tenth that sum.

"Moreover, if they handle it they will tear up the ground and create total disorder," he explained. The decision felt comparable to choosing between suicide and murder.

Over 57 homes in al-Bustan, within the larger Silwan district of East Jerusalem, have been leveled in the past two years, and at least eight more face demolition soon. A biblical theme park named Kings Garden is planned for the location, said to mark the site where King Solomon relaxed three thousand years ago.

The park forms part of an expanding settler-led archaeological effort that highlights only Jerusalem's Jewish history and centers on the so-called City of David, even though many Israeli archaeologists date visible remains to other periods before and after King David's era.

Aviv Tatarsky, a senior researcher at Ir Amim, an organization promoting equitable sharing of Jerusalem, observes that al-Bustan illustrates the removal of Palestinians from both the landscape and the historical record.

"Israel refuses to acknowledge the binational, multi-ethnic, multicultural reality of Jerusalem and is erasing Palestinians first and foremost, along with anything non-Jewish, before covering it with this Disney-like fabrication," he stated. "If completed, visitors will encounter only the park's narrative and remain unaware that lives and an entire community were destroyed to create space for it."

The prospect of the Kings Garden theme park has loomed over al-Bustan for nearly twenty years, though bulldozers were delayed by Palestinian opposition, international objections, and occasional hesitation inside Israeli politics.

All three obstacles have collapsed since the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks, the subsequent Gaza conflict, and the return of Donald Trump to the US presidency. Envoys from other nations continue to visit and offer support, yet with Washington's backing their efforts have proven ineffective.

"Stray dogs roaming the neighborhood at night feel safer than we do," said Mohammad Qwaider, 60, a father of six. He recently demolished part of the house that had served his family for more than fifty years in an attempt to satisfy planners. This week a municipal official warned that bulldozers would return to clear the remainder.

Qwaider suffers chronic back issues, has a son with special needs, and cares for an elderly mother unable to move, leaving the family with few alternatives.

"If they demolish our house we will pitch a tent and stay," he said. "They may misjudge Palestinian resolve. We are not an easy target and you cannot seize our land."

His mother, Yusra, remains bedridden in a small ground-floor room. Her life reflects modern Palestinian experience. Born 97 years ago in Jaffa, her family fled in 1948 during the Nakba, the mass displacement accompanying Israel's founding. Nakba commemoration day occurred on Friday, the day after Israeli Jews marked Jerusalem Day with a nationalist march through the Old City chanting "death to Arabs."

From Jaffa the family found refuge in the village of Yalo under Jordanian control west of Jerusalem. In 1967 they were displaced again during the Six-Day War, after which Israeli forces destroyed their home and the village. They relocated to Jerusalem's Jewish quarter in 1970 but stayed only three years before large sections were demolished by the new authorities.

"After the Jewish quarter we arrived here in Silwan. From this place we will not depart, neither I nor my children," she said.

Two doors away, Fakhri Abu Diab, the al-Bustan community leader, made a similar choice when his family home was razed in 2024. He and his wife Amina now reside in a portable cabin amid the ruins of a house occupied by four generations. Only part of the old kitchen remains standing.

"This is where we shared meals with my children and grandchildren," Abu Diab said. "They destroyed our past, our memories, our dreams, my childhood, our childhood, and our future."

He likened the ordeal of living among the wreckage to a physical ailment. "My heart is burning," he said. "You may see me sitting and speaking, yet inside I am on fire."

Abu Diab continues repaying the 43,000-shekel (about 11,000 pounds) municipal fine for the demolition costs at 4,000 shekels (roughly 1,020 pounds) monthly. He also paid 9,000 shekels (about 2,300 pounds) for sandwiches consumed by police during the multi-day operation.

The Jerusalem municipality offered no comment on its actions in al-Bustan but informed the +972 news site that the planned theme park serves "the benefit of all city residents" and that al-Bustan's houses were constructed illegally.

"This area was never zoned for residential use, and the Jerusalem municipality is now working to build a park in an area that suffers from a severe shortage of open public spaces," it stated.

The municipality added that it had sought "for years to find a solution for the residents that would also include a residential alternative, but they did not express any serious interest in reaching a resolution."

Abu Diab countered that the community had long submitted a master plan for the district featuring ample green space, yet it was rejected at the political level. Regarding permits, he noted that some homes, including his own, predated the Israeli occupation.

The municipality routinely withholds building permits from Palestinians in East Jerusalem while granting them to Israeli Jews. Abu Diab further argued that identical regulations are never enforced against unauthorized settler outposts that frequently appear in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Amina Abu Diab, a schoolteacher and social worker, expressed primary concern for the children under her care who now confront homelessness and instability.

"A house represents a child's vision of the future, and when someone demolishes it they shatter those dreams and the child's feeling of safety," she said. "Then what do the children conclude about us? That we cannot defend ourselves or protect our children."
