Pakistan army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir reached Iran on Tuesday October 20 with a delegation in tow. Observers wonder about the goals of this journey.

Pakistan has served as a channel in earlier US-Iran exchanges. The country works to lower tensions after US and Israeli strikes on Iran that started February 28. At the same time Pakistan has built stronger links with Saudi Arabia via a defense accord with Riyadh and another involving Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Ties between Pakistan and Iran remain intricate. Iran keeps workable relations with both Pakistan and India. Insurgencies plague Iran's southeast Balochistan area and Pakistan's adjacent Balochistan province. Shared concerns arise in that border zone. Common interests may also exist in Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The Pakistan trip follows the arrival of Russia's foreign minister in Tehran on October 19. Iran now sits at the center of several high-level international contacts. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghei stated the visit aims mainly to boost bilateral relations and cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad according to Turkey's Anadolu agency.

Pakistan and Iran have both played down any notion that the visit might produce a deal with the US or deliver a warning to Washington.

US and Iran weigh fresh strikes amid regional strain

The timing aligns with signs the US may launch additional strikes on Iran. Israel remains uneasy as elections near. Numerous factors influence events. In public statements Iran and Pakistan limit talks to bilateral ties and ways to widen cooperation.

The Arab Weekly covered the visit and pointed out that Islamabad aims to mediate between Iran and the United States. The journey takes place against ongoing friction over the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to reach a diplomatic end to the conflict.

A report from The Arab Weekly on October 20 described Munir's visit as part of Pakistan's drive to keep open lines with both Washington and Tehran. Pakistan has become a notable go-between in the conflict seeking to ease tensions and block further escalation.

Munir held earlier talks with Iranian officials over the summer. Those meetings centered on reopening the Strait of Hormuz lowering military tensions and charting a path to end the war.

Strait of Hormuz stays central to regional stability

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital concern for regional players. Gulf states had hoped Russia's foreign minister would raise the issue with Iran. Iran shows little willingness to shift position. Oil prices have risen above 100 dollars a barrel and the world economy shows signs of unease.

The Arab Weekly reported that Iran has proposed reopening the strait within seven days citing Reuters. Washington and Tehran still differ on security guarantees and responsibility for maritime security. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has kept up criticism of the United States over tensions in the Gulf.

Pakistan keeps its mediation role because it holds contacts with both sides. Yet the country has struggled to secure a breakthrough since hosting the Islamabad talks in April.

Pakistan faces real barriers to any fresh agreement. It lacks the power to compel either party to accept terms.
