The Nobel Peace Prize once aimed to recognize authentic work toward global harmony, according to its founding purpose.

The 2026 award to South African judge Navanethem Navi Pillay, known for sharp criticism of Israel, illustrates how the prize has moved in an opposite direction.

Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge, held the role of UN high commissioner for human rights from 2008 to 2014, during which she advanced positions critical of Israel. Last year she led a UN-commissioned report that determined Israel had carried out genocide in Gaza.

Hamas, the Iran-supported group responsible for the deliberate October 7, 2023 attack that killed 1,200 people in southern Israel and took 251 hostages, received minimal attention in the findings.

Attention remains fixed on Israel as part of a broader effort to undermine and isolate the Jewish state with the goal of its eventual removal.

Background on the Commission Led by Pillay

In 2021 the UN established a standing inquiry into alleged war crimes by Israel. The commission issues reports twice yearly and faces regular scrutiny in UN sessions, reflecting a pattern of sustained focus on the country after granting perpetual refugee status to Palestinians.

Pillay headed the three-person panel despite prior calls for boycotts and sanctions against Israel. Fellow members Miloon Kothari and Chris Sidoti shared similar records. All three stepped down last year, reportedly concerned about potential US sanctions similar to those applied to another UN official with anti-Israel views.

The Norwegian committee revealed its choice on October 9 while Israel marked the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks, the deadliest assault on Jews since the Holocaust.

Pillay was selected over other reported candidates such as Sudan relief groups and Ukrainian organizations working to reunite children taken by Russia.

Israel's Foreign Ministry responded sharply on social media, stating that Pillay would lead any contest for falsehoods and prejudice, and that the award represents the misuse of the prize to endorse hostility toward Israel.

The statement described the decision as an attempt to legitimize bias rather than advance justice.

Observers noted that such recognition rewards the central falsehood of the century, evoking historical figures known for propaganda.

Chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov remarked on social media that future chemistry prizes might go to bomb makers, later clarifying the distinction between Norwegian and Swedish Nobel bodies while underscoring the broader irony.

Past awards, including the 2012 prize to the European Union, have also drawn notice for reflecting narratives unfavorable to Israel, even though Norway itself is not an EU member.

Swedish writer Henrik L. Barva, a noted supporter of Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, highlighted this inconsistency.

Earlier, when the 2009 prize went to Barack Obama before he assumed office, observers considered other categories where he might qualify, such as literature or physics for defying conventional expectations.

Obama later missed opportunities to back Iranian protesters in 2009 and advanced a nuclear agreement whose effects continue to influence global affairs.

The 1994 award shared by Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin, and Shimon Peres for the Oslo Accords prompted serious reservations at the time.

Recent events in Taiwan, marking 30 years of direct presidential elections, underscore shared values of democracy with Israel during a national day reception in Tel Aviv.

Taiwanese representatives stressed potential cooperation in technology and AI alongside support for Israeli communities rebuilding after conflict.

Taiwan lost its UN seat in 1971 to the People's Republic of China, leaving the democratic island unable to contribute through UN channels while China holds a permanent Security Council position alongside Russia.

The postponement of Palestinian Authority elections, originally promised in exchange for recognition as a state, follows a familiar pattern, with new dates set for September 2027 but little expectation of follow-through.

The first elections in two decades were due next month yet face repeated delays.

PA leader Mahmoud Abbas, serving beyond his original term, attributed the holdup to Israel.

Israel prepares for its own elections on October 27, demonstrating that democratic processes do not always secure international acclaim, a reality shared by both Israel and Taiwan.

US President Donald Trump criticized the Pillay decision, noting his own exclusion despite the Abraham Accords and subsequent actions regarding Iran.

Previous contenders such as UNRWA and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres were cited for similar reasons of Israel criticism rather than peace achievements.

Guterres praised the award, emphasizing the rule of law over force.

Law professor Yuval Elbashan recalled a 2009 meeting where Pillay expressed opposition to a Jewish state, equating it with South African apartheid.

He viewed the prize as further proof of politicization in international bodies, where anti-Israel positions serve as a path to major recognition.

Elbashan added that Pillay seeks to adjust the legal definition of genocide to apply to Israel's Gaza operations while serving as an ad hoc judge in a case involving Myanmar and the Rohingya.

The adjustment targets Israel rather than aiding the Rohingya.

Recipients like Pillay leave world peace and justice diminished.
