The current clashes between Iran and America over the Strait of Hormuz center squarely on atomic arms.

Although the Hormuz conflicts involve waterway dominance and financial stakes, the broader picture reveals they concern the trajectory of Iran's atomic weapons effort.

During two rounds of fighting in June 2025 and early 2026, Israel together with the United States set back Iran's atomic program from a matter of months to several years away from weapon capability.

One remaining key element of that program involves more than 400 kilograms of 60 percent enriched uranium, now buried under debris yet still highly hazardous.

Although President Donald Trump granted several troubling compromises in his June agreement with Tehran, he secured one vital point: a framework for extracting or neutralizing the 60 percent enriched stockpile.

Iran's true objective in the Hormuz confrontations is to gauge how far it can push renewed tensions in the strait to force Trump to ease pressure on the nuclear file. Tehran employs economic leverage through the waterway to negotiate improved terms after the wartime nuclear pledges it offered.

From the agreement's outset, Iran has tested limits in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump and Iran clash over Hormuz access

After Trump declared the passage open, Tehran alternated between claiming it remained closed or would reopen only upon payment of steep tolls meant to offset wartime damages.

Following an initial exchange over the matter, Iran appeared to yield briefly by allowing fee-free transit for 60 days, while hinting that charges would resume once the 60-day implementation talks concluded.

Tehran triggered earlier incidents to discourage Israeli moves against Hezbollah in Lebanon, ultimately helping conclude that conflict.

More recently, Iran has periodically targeted vessels transiting the strait near Omani waters that fail to register with authorities in Tehran.

In the previous round of tensions, Iran struck allied American vessels, prompting limited US responses against select Iranian sites near the waterway.

This week's multiple strikes on US-allied shipping produced a modestly stronger American counteraction against more than 80 Iranian positions and smaller craft around the strait.

Even so, these measures fell well short of the force needed to deter Tehran from its broader strategy of intermittent Hormuz pressure aimed at reversing nuclear concessions the Trump team insists were already accepted.

Iran reacts swiftly to American strikes

Tehran responded without delay by targeting several American Arab partners in the area, including US installations, to demonstrate its dismissal of the American response.

The selected sites represented minor tactical locations near Hormuz rather than assets of genuine strategic importance to the regime.

Trump currently avoids deeper strikes, concerned that renewed full-scale war could undo recent progress in lowering fuel prices since the earlier fighting ended.

That captures the central problem.

So long as Iran perceives Trump's aversion to renewed conflict and strikes on high-value targets, it sees little reason to yield on nuclear matters.

Periodic disruption of the strait, Tehran calculates, will eventually exhaust Trump through repeated fuel-price swings and prompt him to seek stability even at the cost of restoring prior nuclear concessions.

Trump faces two main paths if he intends to outlast this nuclear pressure campaign.

The first requires striking the Islamic Republic forcefully once more, focusing on senior leaders, weapons systems, or major economic holdings, while accepting the risk of wider war.

The alternative involves maintaining a prolonged US military presence to conduct periodic limited strikes below a critical threshold, withholding owed funds, and gradually wearing down the regime until it fulfills the nuclear pledges already made.

To seal the nuclear threat for roughly 15 years, Trump, the United States, Israel, and other nations must recognize that the Hormuz confrontations involve stakes far beyond fuel prices alone.
