Knesset passes bill recognizing Israeli Sign Language

The Knesset plenum approved a bill granting official recognition to Israeli Sign Language during its second and third readings on Monday.

Proposed by MKs Avichai Boaron from Likud and Chili Tropper from National Unity, the measure received backing from six MKs without any opposition or abstentions.

According to the bill's explanatory notes, Israeli Sign Language functions as the primary means of communication for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in Israel. It also contributes to the identity, culture, and sense of pride within the deaf community. The legislation aims to formally acknowledge Israeli Sign Language as the natural language of deaf people in the country.

Tropper highlighted the collaborative effort between coalition and opposition parties that enabled the bill's passage. He noted that despite challenging times, this represented a moment of grace for the nation.

Historic Day for the State of Israel

Former MK Shirly Pinto, who previously advocated for this cause, celebrated the completion of the legislation, calling it a historic day for the State of Israel.

Pinto viewed the official recognition as a triumph for justice, equality, and accessibility. She expressed gratitude to the bill's sponsors and social activist Boaz Ahad Ha'am for their leadership in advancing the initiative.

As a deaf political activist fluent in Israeli Sign Language, Pinto co founded The Israeli Center for Deaf Studies.

She emphasized that the time has arrived for every citizen to feel a sense of belonging and accessibility within Israeli society.

Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar of Likud was appointed to oversee the implementation of the language. Additionally, the Academy of the Hebrew Language will handle its preservation, development, and promotion across the nation.
