Some political moves cross a boundary even when the official involved offers a technically sound defense later. Defense Minister Israel Katz's on-air handling of OC Central Command Maj.-Gen. Avi Bluth crossed that boundary.

Katz maintains he never declared Bluth's removal during the Sunday interview on Channel 14. When a panelist demanded the general's dismissal, Katz replied, "No."

He further states that IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir had suggested Maj.-Gen. Dado Bar Khalifa for the Central Command role months prior, that Katz had already met with him, and that the selection process was already moving forward ahead of the broadcast.

Those details may hold up factually, yet they do not fix the core issue. The problem was not merely whether Katz said the word "dismiss" or when Bar Khalifa's name first entered the timeline.

The real concern was the setting: a defense minister in a partisan studio openly weighing the replacement of an active general and tying it to political grievances over the officer's approach to extremist settler violence.

That explains the IDF's firm reply. It noted the remarks had not been cleared with Zamir, highlighted that Bluth leads in a difficult environment "with professionalism, bravery, and dedication," and called for full confidence in him.

Zamir had no plan to rotate senior commanders in this sensitive pre-election window, the IDF added, and any future choice would follow standard procedures.

After-the-fact explanation or repair attempt?

Katz issued his clarification only after criticism mounted. The delay makes it hard to see the statement as anything beyond an effort to contain fallout. He may have possessed a procedural argument, but he advanced it only after the televised moment sparked institutional friction.

And to what end? Responses from the Right indicate the episode failed to yield the political gain Katz may have sought. Some settler activists have long claimed he has not curbed Bluth, while others have backed the general and noted his security achievements.

The episode satisfied neither side. Instead it turned a key military post into another test of allegiance for the most vocal participants.

Bluth needs no one to cast him as a symbol. Central Command oversees one of Israel's most volatile regions: halting Palestinian attacks, shielding Israeli communities, addressing violence by Israelis, upholding the law, and keeping local events from escalating into larger threats. These duties often conflict, and every choice draws fire from some quarter.

An officer in that role serves Israel's security, the law, his troops, and the operational realities on the ground. That obligation must outweigh any politician's campaign calculations.

Not genuine scrutiny but staged audience involvement

None of this suggests the IDF stands above review. After the October 7 attacks, no public body should escape examination. Commanders must account for errors, policies require challenge, and selections deserve careful study. Yet proper military oversight differs from converting senior appointments into live audience spectacles.

If Likud figures seek a pressing public discussion about the IDF, one exists: who must serve, who receives exemptions, and whether the load of national defense falls evenly. That conversation affects readiness, personnel numbers, reservist households, and the nation's path ahead. It carries more weight than seeking cheers on Channel 14 by seeming to diminish an active general.

Katz ought to aim higher. More broadly, every elected official should treat this incident as a caution ahead of elections. Desperate tactics do not gain legitimacy through a viral moment, and citizens are not as easily misled as some strategists assume: they can spot when a vital institution is turned into a prop.

Israel faces enough real challenges without officials creating fresh ones for brief applause. This was a misguided election tactic that went well past acceptable limits. The larger worry is that it may mark only the start.
