Kataib Hezbollah representatives joined proceedings in Iran on the third day of the funeral for former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian media reports released on Monday.

Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who had been mentioned in reports as a potential candidate eyed by Israel and the United States for a leadership role after Operations Roaring Lion and Epic Fury, was also present at the event. Hundreds of Iranians marched while carrying red flags, which serve as symbols of revenge.

Khamenei died in February amid the initial strikes of Operation Roaring Lion. The funeral, postponed because of the continuing conflict, started on Saturday with crowds chanting against America and Israel. Events are scheduled to continue for at least a week at locations throughout the country.

Large groups of mourners, many in tears and some striking their chests, gathered at the Mosalla complex, with some remaining through the night. The Iranian metro system recorded seven million trips between late Saturday and Sunday morning as people traveled to the central area.

Officials intend to organize large processions involving millions over the next several days, providing transportation along with food and lodging support.

Video clips from state media outlets captured mourners chanting slogans focused on revenge and vowing to target those responsible for the death of their leader.

The body is set to travel to Qom, Najaf, and Kerbala, key Shiite sites in Iran and Iraq, ahead of burial on Thursday in Mashhad at the nation's most sacred shrine.

Successor Mojtaba Khamenei Absent Due to Assassination Concerns

The New York Times noted over the weekend that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late leader and current supreme leader, stayed away because of regime worries over a possible Israeli assassination attempt at the gathering.

State television broadcast images of Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud Khamenei praying behind the coffins arranged in the expansive courtyard of Tehran's Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla.

No public appearance or photo of Mojtaba has emerged. He was reportedly wounded in the February 28 attack that killed his father and other relatives when Israel and the United States struck Iranian sites at the outset of the war.

Accounts from those close to his circle indicated that Mojtaba suffered facial disfigurement and serious leg injuries.

Iranian Commander Issues Warning Against Attacks During Funeral

In a statement issued on Friday, Ali Abdollahi, commander of Khatam al-Anbiya, cautioned Israel and the United States against any missteps during the week of ceremonies and promised severe responses if an attack occurs. Khatam al-Anbiya serves as the joint military command for Iran.

The warning came after the coffin appeared in an unscheduled display in Tehran on Thursday, shown in footage from state broadcaster IRIB.

IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi stood near the coffin in what marked his first public appearance since the start of the Israel-Iran conflict.
