In a clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder, roughly 80 percent of participants reported fewer symptoms, and most no longer met the criteria for the condition after completing the program.

The research at Clalit Health Services HaEmeek Medical Center examines the safety and value of this approach as demand for effective PTSD care rises across Israel.

Healthcare records show PTSD diagnoses have climbed about 70 percent since October 7 and the ongoing conflict.

Clinical psychologist and study co-leader Ronen Sidi noted that around 15 percent of combat soldiers facing intense battlefield trauma may develop lasting PTSD.

Sidi, a former member of the Duvdevan Unit, pointed out that those with PTSD are often resilient and committed people who struggle to ask for support or discuss feelings of fear, guilt, or helplessness.

The surge in post-traumatic stress cases since October 7 affects countless individuals, with ripple effects on families and the wider community, said Dr. Alon Reshef, Director of Psychiatry at Clalit-HaEmek Medical Center and lead investigator.

Reshef stressed that prompt action improves recovery odds.

Starting care within the first month to a year after trauma boosts success rates markedly, while longer delays make the process more difficult, though real progress remains possible even in long-standing cases.

MDMA serves as a tool within therapy, not a cure

Both Sidi and Reshef clarified that MDMA acts only as an aid inside the broader therapy and is not the treatment on its own.

The full protocol includes 13 intensive psychotherapy sessions, three of which involve monitored MDMA doses given under medical watch. Two trained therapists, such as psychiatrists or psychologists skilled in trauma work, remain with each participant throughout those sessions.

Under MDMA, individuals can revisit traumatic events while maintaining emotional balance, trust, and psychological safety, allowing them to address barriers like shame, guilt, and helplessness under close guidance.

MDMA can pose risks without supervision, hospital cautions

Reshef and the hospital warned that MDMA is not a miracle fix and should never be taken without proper medical and psychological oversight, as unsupervised use may worsen outcomes.

Study participants passed thorough medical and psychological checks, had solid family backing, and received continuous professional support. All had already tried standard PTSD treatments.

The hospital noted that MDMA stays illegal outside approved research and must not be used for self-treatment, yet structured clinical protocols with careful oversight can deliver meaningful help.
