Incidents targeting Palestinians, Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, and European visitors during the West Bank olive harvest highlight gaps in security measures. Israeli authorities had foreseen possible disturbances. They must now clarify why their advance steps did not stop these attacks.

On Friday, masked Israeli radicals targeted Palestinian olive harvesters near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah. Levine, dressed in clearly marked press attire, suffered a beating and required hospital care.

She received surgery for a serious hand wound. A journalist recording acts of violence became a target herself, while Palestinians collecting their produce faced intimidation.

On Saturday, masked Israelis reportedly struck a group touring olive groves near the Palestinian Christian village of Taiba. Diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland were among those present.

A Belgian consular vehicle sustained damage, and visiting French Mayor Bernard Baudoux was reportedly assaulted. Police launched an inquiry, and the IDF denounced the incident.

Katz directs removal of risks to public order amid olive harvest

On October 8, Defense Minister Israel Katz directed officials to seek administrative removal orders against activists viewed as risks to public order during the harvest period.

The Yesha Council, representing Israeli settlements, had called for measures due to worries over provocations and clashes. The order centered on left-wing and foreign activists joining Palestinian farmers.

Katz's directive shows the government foresaw trouble. The IDF had also readied for nationalist clashes and attacks. Officials could not have foreseen the precise sites of the assaults. They must determine where safeguards and reactions fell short.

The IDF is reportedly set to bolster its West Bank deployment. Extra forces may prove useful, yet authorities should explain what units were on hand, when alerts came in, and how responses unfolded.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office addressed Saturday's event on X by stating that any violence against diplomats is unacceptable. It added that stronger claims require stronger proof. The response noted an active police probe and pointed out that video did not capture the full chain of events.

Yet the office also highlighted Baudoux as a French Communist Party mayor who had once flown the Palestinian flag over his town hall, leading French officials to demand its removal.

His political stance offers no grounds for an attack. Raising it without clear ties undercuts the office's call for fairness.

The office further implied the accounts formed part of an effort to tarnish Israel and Jewish residents of the West Bank.

Israel must safeguard everyone, irrespective of political stance

Investigators must pinpoint individual accountability. Authorities must shield farmers, journalists, and visitors no matter their political leanings.

President Isaac Herzog took a distinct approach on Saturday by phoning Levine to express regret.

I felt deep distress over the weekend upon reflection, and I convey sincere regret and an apology for your ordeal, he conveyed to her, per his office. Herzog called on law enforcement to probe and pursue those at fault.

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee, a strong backer of Israel and its settlements, has been equally direct in the past. Denouncing a separate West Bank event in August, he labeled violent intruders Israeli terrorists and stated there was no excuse for such aggressive conduct.

Criticism from Israel's allies should heighten the need for swift measures.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar denounced Saturday's attack yet noted that prior coordination with the IDF might have aided in protecting the group. Coordination can enhance safety. Its lack leaves officials accountable for stepping in when assaults happen.

The IDF indicated an alert during the Taiba event reached a brigade operations room meant for security staff rather than civilians. If reporting paths fail to deliver urgent notices to those positioned to act, they require correction.

This past week's reported alert of a planned Hamas strike highlights the ongoing danger of Palestinian terrorism.

The radicals targeting Palestinians do not speak for the great majority of Jewish residents in Judea and Samaria, whose security must stay a focus for Israel's forces.

Israel confronts genuine West Bank security risks, including Palestinian terrorism. Commanders must defend Israeli communities while enabling Palestinian farmers to harvest without harm.

Violence by Israelis erodes state authority and hinders soldiers' efforts. Prevention demands patrols in known trouble areas, quick action, detentions, and solid prosecutions.

Officials must publicly address any lapses found and describe how they will secure the remaining harvest. Farmers should collect their crops, and journalists should record events, without fear.
