The domestic political situation in Israel remains difficult, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition pushes forward divisive measures in the final Knesset sessions before the October vote. At the same time, developments in Washington reveal equally troubling trends for the country's international standing.

Two incidents from Capitol Hill this week, consisting of one legislative vote and one public interview, underscored the rapid spread of anti-Israel positions among influential American decision makers.

The intensity with which members of both the Republican and Democratic parties are targeting Israel, often sidelining other major policy priorities, shows that the historic US-Israel relationship faces a genuine crisis.

One hundred three House Democrats supported an amendment to end assistance to Israel. The measure failed by a tally of 314 to 104. It was introduced by Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, whose stance on this issue has become a defining feature of his record. Massie recently lost his GOP primary ahead of the November elections.

Although Republicans largely opposed the amendment, Vice President JD Vance made clear that concerns also exist on the political right.

Vance Points to Alleged Israeli Influence Efforts in US Politics

During an appearance on the popular podcast hosted by Joe Rogan, who has described Israel's Gaza operations as genocide, Vance referred to covert Israeli influence operations inside the United States.

He stated that a well-financed effort had sought to undermine ongoing negotiations and block an agreement. Vance cited a recent Time magazine article that named individuals allegedly compensated through connections to the Israeli government.

Those same individuals, he claimed, had launched dishonest attacks against him for pursuing the administration's stated objectives. Vance responded that he would focus on serving American interests first.

Vance Repeats Discredited Claims About Epstein and Israeli Intelligence

The vice president, viewed as a leading contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, also repeated longstanding conspiracy theories linking Jeffrey Epstein to Israeli intelligence. These assertions have been repeatedly disproven.

His willingness to endorse such theories aligns Vance more closely with far-right commentators including Tucker Carlson, Nick Fuentes, and Candace Owens.

Viewed individually, the House vote and the Vance interview each raise serious questions about the future of the US-Israel bond. Together they serve as a clear warning that the era of instinctive bipartisan support, once embodied by figures such as Lindsey Graham and Joe Biden, has ended.

While external criticism deserves rebuttal, Israel must also examine its own actions to counter the rising tide of negative opinion. Lawless conduct by vigilante groups in the West Bank, for example, creates dangerous flashpoints and harms the country's reputation abroad.

Similarly, comments by former officials such as Rahm Emanuel may contain uncomfortable truths that require attention. Jerusalem can no longer dismiss the growing tendency among some US candidates to adopt hostile narratives or to blame Israel for broader regional entanglements.
