Iranian strikes on Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and further Gulf nations have removed any lingering separation between Israel's standoff with Tehran and the security risks confronting the broader area.

For years Gulf governments depended on American safeguards, sustained quiet security links with Israel and preserved diplomatic routes to Iran. These states understandably steered clear of open collaboration with Israel to prevent stirring Tehran, stirring local sentiment or straining ties with fellow Arab countries.

Such a stance may have allowed flexibility in calmer times. It falls short now that Iranian missiles and drones target Gulf soil, endanger American installations and put ports, airports, energy sites and desalination plants in jeopardy.

Iran has shown that states need not wage war against it to become targets. Hosting US troops, aiding regional defense work or blocking Tehran's goals can suffice. Israel and the Gulf states confront distinct political settings, yet the arms endangering their people originate from the same stockpile and advance the same aims.

The answer must therefore turn regional.

Unified regional protection grows vital after Iranian strikes

Israel and the Gulf states already hold many tools needed for a joint defense network. Israel brings deep know-how in spotting and stopping ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. Gulf nations have poured resources into Patriot, THAAD and similar defensive tools. The United States runs radar, air-defense assets and command setups throughout the region.

Prior cooperation has aided during crises, yet much stays quiet, scattered and reliant on rushed choices after strikes start. That may work when dangers stay narrow. It turns risky when multiple nations face simultaneous launches and key infrastructure can be hit in minutes. Recent events reveal how fast separate national setups can be swamped, evaded or left to respond solo.

A formal setup should start with live intelligence exchange and a shared early-warning view. Radar information must flow swiftly among Israel, Gulf states and US forces, using settled steps for spotting incoming threats and tasking the best-placed system to stop them.

Joint drills should cover more than missile defense. Governments must ready for airport shutdowns, cyberattacks, hospital overloads, power and water cuts, plus hits on oil sites, ports and desalination plants. Civil-defense teams should train side by side just as military leaders do.

This setup would not demand every nation normalize ties with Israel at once. Cooperation can grow step by step, with the United States serving as organizer and backer. Some parts may stay quiet at first, especially while the Palestinian question still influences Arab views.

Quiet steps, though, cannot stay ad hoc. Missile-defense ties must run through steady channels, not last-minute calls. Intelligence sharing must follow fixed routines, not shifting political calls during each strike. Regional safety cannot hinge on whether leaders choose to admit cooperation openly.

Some governments may worry a formal defense body would provoke Iran. Tehran's strikes have already undercut that claim. Gulf states that tried to dodge escalation still faced targeting. Defensive ties would not signal war. They would limit Iran's chance to exploit gaps between national systems and lower the odds its attacks succeed.

Israel should approach this chance with care. Open claims about hidden links would trouble Gulf governments and hinder progress. Israeli officials should also avoid framing regional ties as proof the Palestinian question can be set aside. Quiet, steady work will deliver more than public boasts.

The Gulf states should likewise see that Israel's defense know-how, intelligence reach and operational skill can help shield their cities and facilities right now. Israel gains when Iranian launches are spotted sooner, when regional partners trade data and when defense loads are shared across several nations.

Iran has already forged a common battle space. Israel, the Gulf states and the United States must now create the lasting regional defense network required to safeguard it.
