Gas prices have dominated headlines as newscasters, politicians, and voters highlight the burden at the pump.

Before the conflict started in February 2026, regular gasoline averaged around $2.80 per gallon per US Energy Information Administration data. By October the figure exceeded $4.30, after a brief drop near $3.70 in July.

As midterm voting approaches, fuel expenses rank high among voter worries, with many attributing the rise to President Donald Trump. Analysts such as Ali Velshi and Christiane Amanpour have labeled the fighting a Trump-led conflict of choice while stressing its economic toll.

Yet those same newsrooms have largely skipped a significant Reuters account from October 14 that quoted two senior Iranian officials. The report stated Tehran has targeted vessels to sustain elevated oil prices and affect the US midterms.

In September, Trump charged Iran with election interference efforts.

He told reporters that Iranian leaders were desperate to shape the vote and install weaker officials who would ignore their nuclear ambitions.

Politico, CNN, and The Washington Post carried his statements. Those outlets, however, omitted the Iranian officials' comments, leaving readers to view the remarks as routine campaign rhetoric.

Later that month, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Gen. Hossein Mohebbi presented what he described as a letter to the American people during a Tehran press event.

In later comments to the Associated Press, Mohebbi called on Americans to question their leadership and oppose Trump policies, criticizing what he termed government warmongering.

Around October 14, Iranian strikes sank two vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Fox News covered the incidents and the wider rise in attacks. The Times noted more strikes occurred in one week than throughout September.

That same day, Reuters published details essential for Americans assessing the war and energy costs.

The two officials told Reuters that Iran was using fresh methods to strike ships in the Strait to maintain high oil prices and sway the midterm ballot.

One official explained that Iran had altered attack patterns and speed to counter US and partner moves aimed at reducing global oil prices.

Reuters reported that Iran's top leadership endorsed the approach and aligned it across ruling bodies. Tehran planned to extend operations past the strait into the Gulf of Oman and beyond.

The second official said the goal was to block Trump from cutting oil prices ahead of the elections.

CNN included an analyst view of the tactic but excluded the officials' direct statements. Maritime analyst Matt Smith noted that Iran seemed to be keeping oil prices elevated before the midterms through stepped-up strikes by itself and via the Houthis.

A CNN segment also informed viewers that analysts linked the attacks to Tehran's bid to hold oil prices high through election day.

An analyst's opinion, however, carries less weight than officials confirming the strategy, which CNN left out.

Major newsrooms often run Reuters stories, including those based on unnamed officials.

Still, coverage from CNN, The Washington Post, MS NOW, and The New York Times did not present these statements to audiences while addressing the attacks, gas prices, or foreign election influence.

Fox News placed the Reuters piece only inside its live blog. Editors decided which elements reached their viewers.

Sabotaging Americans from a Distance

Additional events heightened concerns over Iranian influence.

On October 14, X's Global Government Affairs account announced it had suspended more than 13,000 accounts tied to three suspected foreign influence networks from Iran, Russia, and China.

X stated the networks used fake accounts to spread and boost US political content while targeting candidates and figures across the spectrum.

The New York Times covered the announcement on October 16 but centered its article on Russia and skipped Iran's involvement.

Unlike online disinformation efforts, Tehran's approach goes beyond opinion shaping. It actively harms ordinary Americans economically.

Earlier in October, The Washington Post reported a National Intelligence Council review found Iranian activity, though smaller in scale than Russian or Chinese efforts.

The piece added that US intelligence viewed direct tampering with voting machines or tallies as unlikely. Iran does not need to alter ballots to attempt election influence. Its reported plan uses force to raise everyday costs and shift votes.

Outlets have given ample space to Trump's role in the war and the financial strain Americans face at the pump. The Reuters account fits that discussion.

When senior Iranian officials told the wire service that Tehran was hitting shipping to keep oil prices high and affect the midterms, Americans should hear it.

Newsrooms that regularly use Reuters material, including unnamed-official accounts, should not omit this from a story they already treat as important.

Such an admission carries heavy implications. A foreign adversary openly trying to manipulate fuel markets to influence voters challenges core democratic principles.

The omission prompts questions about editorial choices and whether political leanings affected coverage.

It also risks aiding a foreign adversary in influencing an American election by withholding information voters need.
