The standoff between Washington and Tehran is evolving into a clash lacking any sharply defined limits on where fighting might occur.

Initial moves centered on direct military actions and control over the Strait of Hormuz have now spread pressure over a far broader area. Gulf nations have encountered strikes and warnings aimed at key facilities. US options against Iranian soil have grown from airstrikes to talks of targeting Kharg Island and possible ties with Kurdish or other opposition groups. Iranian responses have raised the chance of strikes reaching Kuwait and perhaps Bahrain.

An inside source in Iran informed The Media Line that Tehran warns of a move into Kuwait should Washington launch a ground effort supported by Kurdish units. This matches a statement from parliament member Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani last week noting that US troops on Iranian soil could prompt Iranian ground actions in Kuwait and Bahrain.

At the same time, Houthi forces have increased risks near Bab-el-Mandeb by striking Saudi-linked vessels, adding strain to alternative sea routes for Riyadh amid the Hormuz issues.

Israel, which has stayed clear of the latest direct exchanges, continues to monitor developments. The reopening of public shelters in several areas on Thursday signals no immediate Iranian strike, yet it shows worry that further US-Iran escalation could pull Israel back into the fray.

Is a ground war likely?

These steps together do not prove a regional ground conflict is about to start. They do raise a key issue: whether the expanding set of military ideas under discussion might spark unintended escalation between the two capitals.

The difference matters, since a full US invasion, a limited island grab like Kharg, a special forces raid, or backing local forces each mean very different levels of involvement.

John Keith King of Q Advisory urged caution against reading these options as proof the White House has chosen a ground campaign.

These ideas deserve attention, yet planning must not be mistaken for a final order to start ground fighting, King told The Media Line. The Pentagon prepares for many scenarios, from small island actions to support for local partners.

King noted that clear signs of a major ground push have not appeared in public.

No verified details on unified command, secure bases, steady supply lines, or air cover point to an imminent move, he said. A Kurdish role seems more possible than a standard US invasion, though it would still need heavy American backing.

The gap between plans and action remains vital to grasping this stage of the conflict.

Major forces always prepare varied plans. Once one side sees those plans as a push for regime change or occupation, the meaning of preparations can shift fast.

From Tehrans viewpoint, this risk stands out. Researcher Mohammed Ali Ghanamizadeh Fallahi argued that US strikes in southern Iran already hint at wider aims.

The key point is that attacks shown by CENTCOM footage focus less on military sites or major infrastructure, he told The Media Line. In his view, the choices suggest a psychological effort to empty southern zones ahead of any ground move, easing defenses.

His reading reflects opinion rather than confirmed US plans. Still, it shows a core danger: Washington may see its moves as pressure tactics, while Tehran views them as steps toward a larger assault.

Ghanamizadeh Fallahi also doubted the value of a southern push. A southern route makes little sense, as US gear does not fit island conditions, he said, and resistance forces could cut off any advance.

He added that past US ground wars weigh against deeper involvement, given Irans experience with such fighting and memories of Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. A ground effort would prove tough unless it sparks internal unrest and breaks national unity, he said.

The possible effects of Kurdish involvement

That mix of outside pressure and internal strain has drawn attention to Kurdish and minority issues as possible factors in the next stage.

Iran holds diverse ethnic groups with long-standing complaints against the center. Kurdish groups from northern Iraq have clashed with Tehran before, and Baluch areas in the southeast have seen ongoing unrest.

Such groups could let Washington apply pressure without large US troop numbers. Yet the approach carries wide risks beyond any battlefield.

King said Kurdish units could offer Washington several short-term gains.

Washington might expect Iranian Kurdish forces to pull away Revolutionary Guard units, break supply lines, gather intelligence, hold ground, or fuel wider opposition, he said.

Yet short-term pressure does not equal lasting success.

The risk is that this turns a dispute over nuclear, missile, and sea issues into an ethnic and land conflict, King said. Iranian nationalism might rally support for the government, while Tehran could strike Iraqi Kurdistan. Turkey, Baghdad, and others would fear spillover separatism.

In that case, a plan to weaken Tehran could instead boost nationalist backing while creating fresh strains in Iraq and Turkey. Kurdish forces might create tactical effects but are unlikely alone to deliver controlled change or a stable outcome, King said.

Kobi Michael of the Institute for National Security Studies and Misgav Institute also sees a possible Kurdish role if the standoff grows.

The Kurds could take part depending on how events unfold, Michael said, noting many seek greater autonomy.

He pointed to other minorities with grievances, suggesting a wider internal front could form without one central military plan.

Any move to bring in Kurdish armed groups would quickly affect ties with Turkey.

The Kurdish issue remains a top security concern for Ankara, as gains in Iran or Iraq could influence Turkeys own Kurdish population.

Michael noted strong Turkish resistance but said Ankara might not stop groups if they see a historic opening from the wider conflict.

Ghanamizadeh Fallahi offered a different take from Tehran.

They rely on Kurds inside Iran, but that is mistaken, he said. Kurds in Iran will not align with them. He suggested Iran and Turkey might share interests in limiting Kurdish separatist moves.

The split shows broader doubt over any plan built on Irans internal divides. Grievances exist, yet they do not automatically mean support for foreign intervention or acceptance of steps that could split the country.

The pivotal role of Kharg Island

A more limited US territorial move, especially on Kharg Island, raises a separate calculation.

Kharg matters due to its place in Irans oil exports. Taking or disabling it could cut a major revenue source and give Washington extra leverage.

Yet a move that looks narrow could still trigger wide effects. Seizing Kharg could remove Tehrans main oil hub and hand Washington a strong bargaining tool, King said. It would not guarantee decisive advantage.

The challenge goes beyond taking the site. Holding an island against missiles, drones, mines, small boats, and coastal attacks differs from capture, King said. Iran might damage its own facilities rather than let US forces use them.

The real issue for Washington is not just whether it can take Kharg, but what comes next.

An island action could create a new commitment needing constant defense while giving Tehran reason to widen strikes on US forces and Gulf sites. Tehran could also hit Gulf oil terminals, water plants, ports, US bases, and shipping, King said.

Such moves would put Gulf states in a tighter spot.

Many Gulf governments have long balanced ties with Washington and channels to Tehran. As operations hit civilian sites, energy flows, and sea lanes, room for balancing shrinks.

Could Iran invade Kuwait or Bahrain?

The sharpest version of this problem came with Iranian warnings that a US ground move could bring Iranian action in Kuwait and possibly Bahrain. The chance of a standard Iranian invasion remains hotly debated.

Willian I., an advisor at the US Department of State, voiced doubt about Irans ability to seize Kuwait while noting the wider unknowns.

Iran lacks the means to take Kuwait. It is not impossible, but I do not see it happening at this moment, he told The Media Line.
