Iran and Oman have achieved some advancement in negotiations regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, although it is uncertain if Iran will agree to the current proposal, according to two sources with knowledge of the discussions who spoke to The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

One source mentioned that Oman suggested creating a regional group to manage maritime security, search and rescue missions, and additional regional collaborations.

"The essential aspect is that involvement and contributions would be optional," the source stated.

The source added that Iran has resisted this concept so far, preferring required payments and claiming that ships would be prevented from passing through the strait otherwise.

Iranian Foreign Ministry verifies discussions

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei verified that multiple rounds of talks occurred between the deputy ministers of Foreign Affairs in Tehran.

He mentioned that the conversations centered on sharing perspectives about shared principles and operational methods for handling safe shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while honoring the sovereign rights of the two coastal nations.

The spokesman highlighted that the talks were constructive and advancements occurred, noting that the Omani delegation departed Tehran on Saturday evening, yet technical and political consultations between both parties have persisted.
