How Iran Seeks to Restore Its Regional Standing Through Israel Attacks - Analysis

Iran has encountered major setbacks in recent years. Chief among them was the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024 after Syrian rebels seized control. Israel and the United States have also struck the Islamic Republic twice over the past year. Tehran has watched its proxies such as Hamas lose strength and has seen Hezbollah's position erode in Lebanon.

Tehran is attempting to reset the regional dynamics of the past several years. In the period since October 7 it sought to take the initiative by opening multiple fronts against Israel.

Iran's Multi-Front Campaign Loses Momentum

The coordinated effort faltered in September 2024 once Israel launched intense operations against Hezbollah. Israeli forces also removed key leaders from both Hezbollah and Hamas. Ismail Haniyeh was killed while in Iran itself. As a result the regime struggled to keep Israel under sustained pressure.

Iran carried out large-scale ballistic missile and drone assaults on Israel during 2024 yet failed to meet its objectives. Israel absorbed the blows and later chose its moment to respond. In June 2025 the Jewish state delivered surprise strikes during the 12 Day War. The United States supported Israel toward the end of that conflict underscoring that Jerusalem was not isolated.

Tehran observed several neighboring states providing assistance to Israel. Although the exact level of help remained unclear Iran interpreted the 2025 strikes and related events as signs of closer coordination through US Central Command involving Israel and certain Gulf nations.

Iran also grew worried about domestic opposition groups including Kurdish factions. These concerns contributed to a crackdown on protests in January 2026 followed by combined US and Israeli strikes on February 28.

Iran's Regional Strategy Unravels

Tehran watched Lebanon open talks with Israel. For the regime this development signaled the loss of several carefully assembled regional assets built over decades.

As the pieces shifted through discussions in Washington and hints that Iraqi militias might relinquish weapons Tehran weighed its options. Since April it has tied any Lebanon ceasefire to broader negotiations. Iran has informed the United States that a deal requires a halt to fighting in Lebanon as well. This stance has created pressure on Israel to limit strikes on Beirut.

Israel has continued targeting Hezbollah nevertheless prompting Iran to portray its latest missile launches as a response. Tehran has also encouraged the Houthis to reopen their front. The moves serve less as retaliation and more as an attempt to demonstrate renewed power across the region.

Tehran seeks to bind Beirut directly to its own capital. The approach has lifted spirits within Hezbollah. Iran calculates that the United States prefers to avoid another major conflict. Recent strikes on Kuwait and the Gulf underscore Tehran's intent to threaten a 3000-mile arc stretching from Lebanon through the Gulf to Yemen.

It remains uncertain whether Iran can successfully regain its former regional influence.
