IDF continues efforts to identify sender of drone downed near Syrian border

A military source familiar with the details of the incident said that, under standard procedure, before intercepting a drone, the military must verify that the aircraft is not of Israeli origin.

Three days after the Israeli Air Force brought down a drone near the Syrian border, the IDF continues working to identify its operator.

The military has eliminated Iran and the Houthis as possible sources and is pursuing other leads.

On Sunday evening, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit reported that the Air Force intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle in the Syrian border zone, noting that the launch origin remains under review. The IDF added that no alerts were issued per policy.

Three days later, the IDF still lacks clarity on the operator of the downed drone.

Military verified drone was not Israeli

A military source familiar with the incident explained that standard procedure requires confirming a drone is not an Israeli aircraft that has deviated from course or lost control before any interception.

The source noted that once the drone is confirmed non-Israeli and enters airspace threatening IDF forces in Syria or along the border, a decision follows to shoot it down.

By analyzing collected debris, aircraft footage, and data from Israeli systems, the military aims to determine if the drone was American (considered unlikely), a lost Saudi drone, or operated by another regional actor.

A separate security source confirmed that Iran and the Houthis have been ruled out as launchers, though the investigation continues.
