This longtime cinema fan had skipped such screenings before and now advises others to do the same. Weak films gain nothing from added effects, while strong ones stand alone. Nolan's take on Homer's tale proves strong, shown by its quick $250 million earnings in just two weeks.

Its timeline slips appear often and stand out sharply. Homer's world lacked the word civilization, skipped any Bronze Age label, and featured no dark-skinned queen like Nolan's choice of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, which clashes with ancient Greek realities and the text's note of white arms.

Questions over the film's accuracy make sense. Linking the Trojan War to trade paths draws from today's headlines, not Homer. Giving Odysseus regret over the wooden horse ploy feels as likely as a sleepless Donald Trump fretting over election claims.

Yet the film holds attention, which gives it real value. In times when quick posts and symbols push aside books, Nolan's work will introduce millions to a core text of Western culture.

Reaching this goal took more than Nolan's skill with visuals and modern appeal. Homer's own craft and the lasting pull of his tale, which endured roughly 3,000 years, played equal parts.

Created around Isaiah's era, the poem stood apart from Jewish life. Its theme of return still speaks to Jews today as attacks on their story grow.
