Defense sources express concern over Hezbollah FPV drones reaching northern cities

Officials note that this ability would create serious risks for the entire northern area and place strategic assets in jeopardy.

Israeli defense officials worry that Hezbollah may now hold first-person view drones able to travel as far as 60 km. This range would let the group target major northern population centers such as Haifa, Walla reported on Tuesday.

Such a capability would create substantial danger for important infrastructure and other protected sites if confirmed.

FPV drones rank among the toughest tactical threats in southern Lebanon because they avoid wireless links and therefore resist GPS jamming along with other electronic countermeasures.

These aircraft stay linked to the operator through a slender fiber-optic cable that supplies steady control until impact or an attempted strike on the chosen target.

In theory the drones can cover 55-60 km., an IDF drone specialist noted, yet flying them across such distances brings difficult engineering problems.

"The core issue remains the balance between weight and power," the specialist said.

"Longer flights demand larger batteries that add substantial mass and reduce the warhead size," the expert continued.

The cable weight plus wind drag over extended distances also impose major technical limits.

"Hezbollah operators have not reached the proficiency seen in the Ukraine-Russia conflict," the specialist observed.

"Despite the losses suffered, FPV drones present one danger among several larger ones already active, including coordinated swarm attacks on a scale previously unseen," the expert added. "Picture groups of drones that share tasks, talk among themselves, and strike together from different angles and patterns."
