Hezbollah confident any US-Iran deal will include Lebanon, politician says

Hezbollah expressed strong confidence that Iran will push for Lebanon to be part of any agreement reached with the United States, according to a senior Hezbollah politician speaking on Friday amid rising expectations of a deal between Tehran and Washington.

The group, established by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 1982, joined the regional conflict backing Tehran on March 2, launching attacks on Israel and triggering an Israeli response.

Iranian officials have consistently called for an end to the fighting in Lebanon as a condition for any broader accord.

"If the agreement happens, we have complete confidence in the Islamic Republic ... we have confidence that it will insist on any agreement including the file of Lebanon," Hassan Fadlallah, a Hezbollah politician, said in an excerpt of a speech broadcast by the group's al-Manar TV.

US-Iran memorandum still a work in progress

A Western source indicated that a memorandum between the United States and Iran aimed at halting the war in the Gulf could be finalized as early as Sunday. The source noted that wording in the memorandum remains under discussion and Iran continues to require that the deal also stop the fighting in Lebanon.

Last week, Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader, stated that Hezbollah had "made great sacrifices" in the war and that Lebanon "will be an inseparable part of any agreement and any ceasefire," according to comments reported by the IRGC's semi-official Mehr news agency.

The conflict in Lebanon has persisted despite multiple ceasefires announced by the United States, which has been facilitating discussions between the Lebanese and Israeli governments.

Hezbollah is not involved in the talks and has urged the Lebanese government to withdraw from the process.

Hezbollah turned down a US-backed proposal announced last week that would require the group to stop firing and pull its fighters from southern Lebanon.
