After prolonged dry spell that left Syria and Iraq short on water, reservoirs now overflow - analysis

Syria endured a decade of drought that cut groundwater in the east by as much as sixty percent. Wells ran dry and millions stood at risk. Iraq and Iran faced similar shortages. The Mosul dam saw falling levels, Lake Tharthar shrank, and Iran's Lake Urmia nearly vanished.

Conditions have reversed. Dams from Turkey through Syria and Iraq now hold full capacity. Lakes are rising and flooding has replaced scarcity as the main concern. Bridges across the Euphrates in Syria have been taken out of use by high water.

Syria and Turkey coordinate to ease river flow

The Syrian Ministry of Energy stated that joint work with Turkish officials led to reduced inflows along the Euphrates, helping manage high levels in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor provinces. In a Friday statement the ministry noted that technical crews at the Euphrates Dam began steps to lower water gradually by cutting flow rates through the dam by 100 cubic meters per second via partial closure of spillway gate number three.

Water levels reported stable in Syria

Officials added that further reductions will continue in coming days alongside lower inflows from Turkey, allowing levels to return toward normal. Several stretches of the Euphrates in Deir Ezzor and Raqqa have seen steady rises that affected roughly 2,400 families. Emergency teams and local authorities have increased readiness, carried out evacuations where needed, and taken steps to limit damage to residents and property.

Syria now indicates that water levels have stabilized. The recent flooding and altered flows nevertheless demonstrate that the region is not locked into permanent drought. These patterns can shift, and while it remains unclear whether the change will last, the added water should benefit Iraq, Syria, and drought-hit areas of Iran.
