Reports from Jerusalem and Washington this week focused heavily on accounts of an intense telephone exchange in which US President Donald Trump labeled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with strong language regarding regional approaches.

Although attention centered on the personal tension behind this exchange, a more significant point emerged directly from related remarks.

In a New York Post discussion, Trump verified the conversation and mentioned keeping Netanyahu from legal consequences, then stated broadly that without his involvement there would be no Israel.

Any suggestion of influence over Israel's judicial processes raises separate concerns, yet the broader assertion remains deeply problematic.

Hearing the current American president attribute the Jewish state's endurance and existence primarily to one leader stands out as extraordinary.

Such a remark appears especially striking amid ongoing challenges in Israel's northern region, where thousands of residents stay displaced and border areas endure repeated attacks.

Trump's assertion clashes with administration actions

The idea that Israel's survival depends on one US figure is not only inaccurate but stands at odds with the current administration's approach of limits and conditions.

Washington now directs Israel toward a narrow ceasefire structure while overseeing IDF activities in detail, notably stepping in multiple times to halt or scale back planned actions near Beirut.

Shortly after Defense Minister Israel Katz and Netanyahu outlined expanded efforts against Hezbollah in Beirut, Trump intervened by telephone to halt them in support of fragile arrangements with Lebanon and Iran. This approach binds Israel's northern options in the name of stability and leaves it managing an uneasy balance.

Imposing tight controls on Israel's independent defensive choices while asserting sole responsibility for its security creates a clear contradiction.

Such restraint weakens Israel's ability to deter threats over time. A ceasefire that preserves much of Hezbollah's strength in Lebanon merely delays confrontation and risks greater future losses. Emphasis on short-term calm ahead of decisive resolution places Israel's borders at continued risk.

Trump's record of support for Israel

Trump has established a record of notable contributions to the Jewish state.

In his initial term the administration broke long-standing patterns by acknowledging Jerusalem as Israel's capital, relocating the US Embassy, affirming Israeli control over the Golan Heights, and advancing the Abraham Accords.

Recent diplomatic efforts also helped resolve a prolonged impasse and secure the release of Israeli hostages from Gaza, delivering important relief to the country. These steps represent lasting accomplishments that Israelis will recall and that reflect his distinctive influence.

Nevertheless, genuine partnership does not require uncritical agreement or the surrender of national self-respect. Errors by an important ally warrant direct and measured responses from Jerusalem. A bond resting solely on one person's preferences rather than common principles and interests remains fragile.

When an American president casts the Jewish state's survival as a personal gesture, Israel's leadership must offer a clear and principled reply.

Israel functions as an independent nation rather than a dependent entity whose existence is granted by Washington.

The modern State of Israel arose from the determination of early settlers, the legacy of the Holocaust, and the sacrifices of soldiers in defensive conflicts waged without external direction. Its roots trace to an ancient heritage and a steadfast collective resolve.

US assistance continues to provide important value, and Israel should sustain strong ties across party lines in Washington. Yet no individual leader controls Israel's future.

The Jewish state existed long before Donald Trump entered politics, and through its strength, creativity, and determination it will endure long after his time in office concludes.
