US President Donald Trump declined to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for reelection during a Thursday interview with Newsmax even as he noted that some wished for his role in the Knesset elections.

"They would like me to join in," he said while adding "I do not trust anybody honestly. I do not trust anybody. In the world of politics I do not trust anybody."

Trump also spoke about his popularity among Israelis claiming that "The people of Israel they say if I ran for prime minister I would get 99 percent of them."

Israel and the United States enjoyed a very successful military partnership Trump said and he and Netanyahu maintained a very good relationship.

Trump Stays Neutral on Netanyahu Reelection

This is not the first occasion Trump has avoided an explicit endorsement of Netanyahu in his reelection campaign.

When asked by reporters on Tuesday if he would back a candidate Trump replied that "We have not even thought about it" and that "I may be. I may be doing something."

Earlier this month in an interview with Time Magazine Trump also hedged his support for Netanyahu noting that while "people have written off Bibi many many times just like they have written off me many many times" he was "not involved in politics anymore."

Trump Says He Does Not Hear Bad Things About Eisenkot

During that interview Trump also said that he does not hear bad things about Gadi Eisenkot one of Netanyahu chief competitors in the upcoming election.

However in September Trump shared a Channel 13 election poll which projected Netanyahu bloc as winning 54 seats in the Knesset.

According to the poll Gadi Eisenkot Yashar led with 22 seats while Netanyahu Likud fell to a low of 18.
