Even measured against the harsh norms of aggressive settler attacks across the West Bank, the Sunday night incursion into Deir Jarir stood out for its severity, leaving two Palestinians dead and another hospitalized with a bullet wound.

Town residents reported that settlers from a nearby outpost arrived past 9pm on Sunday, asserting they were hunting for missing animals. Israeli troops and police quickly arrived to shield the group as they attempted to seize sheep from several households by force.

After locals sounded the alarm and residents assembled, soldiers fired on two men, triggering three consecutive raids by outpost settlers and security personnel that continued past 2am, according to Deir Jarir accounts.

Saber Ajaj, a relative of 53-year-old victim Odeh Farajna, reached him shortly after the chest wound was inflicted. Farajna served on the village council, ran a flower shop, and assisted with stonework at the cemetery.

"As soon as I placed him in the vehicle I realized he had passed," Ajaj stated during a post-funeral gathering. "The gunfire was clearly intended to be fatal."

While laying the victims to rest on Monday, relatives and neighbors recounted multiple monthly incidents in which settlers, supported by security units, targeted peripheral homes to seize livestock.

"It amounts to joint action by the military and the settlers," stated Adel Rashid, father of the younger victim, 26-year-old Abdul Adel Rashid Abu Mukh.

Rashid noted that 21 of his sheep were taken on Sunday, with another 50 removed from a fellow resident. Footage captured a settler, guarded by four soldiers in camouflage, removing an animal from a house.

These operations reflect rising settler aggression amid efforts by Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing partners to expand control over the occupied West Bank.

Random checkpoints and movement limits imposed on communities like Deir Jarir after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks have been reinforced by government plans to approve fresh settlements ahead of elections that may test the current leadership.

Overlooking the village sits a settlement erected last year that reportedly shares water lines with an army installation, according to Dror Etkes of Kerem Navot, which tracks land policies in occupied areas. Locals indicated coordination between the raiders and troops.

Seven residents have died in the town since October 7, 2023, with their images and dates painted on walls.

"The Deir Jarir killings illustrate Israel's push for ethnic removal in the West Bank, where settlers seize property while forces guard them and fire on those defending homes and goods," said Yuli Novak of B'Tselem, which documents security force conduct.

A review has found Israel has brought no charges against its citizens for civilian deaths in the West Bank this decade, fostering unchecked violence.

Attacks in the region are growing. Fadi Hamdallah al-Naasan, 17, from al-Mughayyir near Ramallah, died Saturday from a leg wound sustained in a July 11 raid by troops and settlers on his home.

Nearly one thousand mourners assembled in Deir Jarir on Monday around midday for the burials, proceeding from the central mosque to the historic cemetery.

At the entrance stands a fresh checkpoint gate installed after October 7 that forces open or shut at will, isolating the area.

"Each assault aims to render life here impossible," said Iyad Odah, 56, a council member who knew Farajna. Since October 7, farmland once spanning thousands of hectares has become unreachable as settlers drive farmers from orchards and pastures.

The Israeli military stated Monday that forces entered Deir Jarir to accompany settlers retrieving claimed livestock. Troops fired after rocks and blocks were thrown, but offered no explanation for using live rounds over less lethal options.

Addressing claims of confronting "terrorists," Odah replied: "They are the real terrorists."
