Netanyahu Cannot Campaign Against the Draft Law He Recently Supported

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's reported concession that his government's measure halting arrests of haredi draft evaders proved ineffective warrants closer examination than a standard policy adjustment.

Reports from a private meeting indicate Netanyahu declared the law would not return in the next administration, with draft evaders not engaged in Torah study required to either enlist or face prison. He also discussed building a broad coalition government to pass conscription rules matching IDF requirements.

These remarks arrived less than three weeks after the coalition enacted the arrest-freeze law on July 14. Netanyahu personally backed the bill in the Knesset to pause enforcement against those ignoring draft orders. The High Court suspended it the next day following legal objections, resistance from reservists and bereaved families, and concerns it would worsen manpower shortages.

Netanyahu now urges voters to view his rejection of his own law as a sign of future determination. The timing complicates that request. The coalition advanced the measure to satisfy haredi partners despite ongoing conflict, extended reserve duties, and military warnings. Only after it became a political liability did the reported reversal surface.

A leaked private comment during campaigning cannot undo the vote, the coalition pressure applied, or the government's prior court arguments that enforcement risked civil unrest. Within days the prime minister reportedly promised jail time for some of the same evaders his government had shielded.

This shift highlights a core inconsistency. Netanyahu frames haredi enlistment as a future task, despite leading most governments since the Tal Law ended in 2012. Fourteen years offered ample opportunity for a fair conscription system. Instead, his administrations repeatedly postponed reform to maintain alliances.

Israel cannot afford further delays. The IDF faces troop shortages. Reservists have shouldered repeated call-ups. Families bear the costs while exemptions persist. Continued postponement shifts more burden onto those already serving.

Netanyahu Must Advance Draft Legislation Before Elections

Netanyahu has one credible path to demonstrate this stance: pass legislation now.

Likud should release a full bill before voting day and pledge to make it a coalition requirement. The plan needs enlistment goals based on IDF needs, a firm schedule, limited exemptions for select Torah scholars, and penalties for missing targets. Orders must be enforced with arrests where required.

Netanyahu must also commit against signing agreements that weaken these rules. Vague talk of a broad government risks the pledge vanishing in talks. The real test is whether he will reject coalitions tied to parties seeking continued exemptions.

His comments carry lasting weight by normalizing enforcement. After years of compromises, Netanyahu has reportedly accepted that evaders must serve or face prison. Haredi leaders can no longer dismiss this as an extreme view.

Mass Exemptions Lack Justification Amid Security Needs

The haredi public contributes importantly to Israel, and integration should honor religious practices with appropriate service options. Still, these factors do not support mass exemptions during extended national emergencies. Equal obligation must guide policy from the start.

Netanyahu's past actions created the problem he now claims to fix. After backing a law shielding evaders, he cannot restore trust through private remarks. He must deliver the bill, timeline, penalties, and coalition pledge before the vote. Less than that repeats the pattern of deferring action until after elections.
