Israel's Arkia Airlines Achieves Milestone with Complex Flight to Arctic Circle

Arkia's initiative may open a fresh chapter in Israeli tourism history, according to Tali Yativ of Spirit World Productions.

Arkia, Israel's second-largest airline, achieved a milestone on June 28 by becoming the first Israeli carrier to operate a chartered flight to Svalbard Airport in the Arctic Circle, recognized as the northernmost commercial airport globally, as announced by Arkia Airlines.

The airline partnered with Spirit World Productions, a travel agency, along with Phototeva Travel Expeditions, experts in polar expeditions to remote Arctic sites, to complete the mission.

The three Israeli organizations coordinated to fly Arkia's Airbus A320 on the roughly 10-hour route from Israel to Norway's Svalbard island, including a refueling stop in Helsinki, Finland.

Svalbard Airport sits near Longyearbyen and lies just over 1,300 km from the North Pole, positioning it as the closest airport with scheduled flights to the North Pole.

The special project completed with Spirit World Productions highlights Arkia's strong operational skills, Arkia CEO Oz Berlowitz said.

Because of its Arctic Circle location, the island faces severe winter cold that once made the prior airport unusable, prompting the 1975 opening of Svalbard Airport designed specifically to handle extreme Arctic conditions.
