How Anduril Thunder could transform drone warfare - analysis

A fresh idea from American defense company Anduril shows the potential of manned-unmanned teaming and drone swarms to alter future combat.

A recent video from US defense firm Anduril presents a striking vision for unmanned aerial combat and the idea of manned-unmanned teaming during conflict. Named Thunder the system is described by the company as an autonomous attack rotorcraft built to boost combat power and improve survival chances for current and future crewed attack and assault aircraft.

Released at the start of the Farnborough Airshow in the UK the video first illustrates how vulnerable conventional large drones can be to air defenses. This point stands out as the drone revolution advances across the United States Israel China and elsewhere older platforms may lose relevance. Firms such as Anduril along with several Israeli defense companies are charting the path ahead.

Anduril states that Thunder offers the payload capacity and open architecture needed to produce decisive effects for any mission while providing the survivability speed and range essential for deep operations and relying on proven autonomy for effective teaming with crewed assets. The firm adds that Thunder represents the defense version of a dual-use platform developed jointly with Archer Aviation transferring rapid commercial VTOL advances in electric propulsion and rotor design into military use. This development grows more relevant on the battlefield and within the wider unmanned systems field. Anduril is also said to be exploring greater activity in Israel which could influence the trajectory of drone warfare.

Lessons emerging from Ukrainian battlefields

Elements of this future already appear in the fighting in Ukraine. Numerous nations study events there to understand the impact of deploying vast numbers of drones across the battlefield. When tens of thousands of drones operate daily over hundreds of miles of front lines and every infantry unit employs small drones the nature of combat shifts markedly.

Beyond small drones the full multi-layered structure of drone warfare will drive change. A key element involves manned-unmanned teaming in which a crewed platform such as a warplane helicopter tank submarine or frigate operates alongside an unmanned system that supports it directly.

The unmanned unit can enter higher-risk zones or handle repetitive tasks where human operators lose effectiveness due to fatigue. The new video features the Thunder system which resembles a tiltrotor aircraft configuration allowing manned and unmanned aircraft to coordinate operations.

In the footage the unmanned helicopter advances toward clustered air defenses. While the manned Apaches shown early in the video face potential threats from those defenses the unmanned platform moves ahead and releases numerous small drones along with decoys. These neutralize the air defense threat and then strike the associated sites.

Toward larger unmanned platforms

The concept proves compelling. It points to a future featuring not only manned-unmanned teaming but also larger unmanned platforms such as tiltrotor aircraft that transport substantial quantities of additional drones. These include small drones capable of engaging other small drones decoys and specialized systems for surveillance tasks.

The approach raises further questions as drone warfare moves toward integration of massive numbers of varied drones with larger systems whether mounted on tanks armored vehicles or ships.

More significantly drones themselves may carry other drones. A platform such as the American MQ-9 Reaper could launch its own munitions or smaller drones including loitering munitions often called one-way attack or kamikaze drones. Yet Reapers have proven susceptible to air defenses in places such as Iran and Yemen.

Releasing drones from a Reaper allows the more vulnerable platform to remain at a safe distance while dispatching lower-cost drones to complete missions. These cheaper drones qualify as attritable meaning forces prefer expending many inexpensive systems over risking a larger aircraft. This pattern now appears across land air and sea domains.

The result creates exponential possibilities. Drone warfare can be viewed as a chess match where initial moves are familiar yet subsequent developments multiply rapidly and remain hard to predict.
