AI applications have energized researchers, and just one day after securing worldwide rights to Novo Nordisk’s clinical-stage cell therapy initiative for Parkinson’s disease, Cellular Intelligence organized an expert gathering on the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Biology at the Novo Nordisk Foundation site in Copenhagen.

The full-day event in mid-May gathered 28 specialists from AI, biology, regenerative medicine, venture capital, and enterprise development to discuss Engineering Cell Fate, an area Breakstone views as the upcoming AlphaFold equivalent in biology.

We are applying AI to grasp cell communication and generate new tissue, Breakstone noted during a discussion with Olivier Pourquie at the gathering.

In that discussion, Breakstone highlighted Parkinson’s, Type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, and macular degeneration as additional conditions that could benefit from the technology.

Parkinson’s disease impacts millions worldwide, with existing options mainly addressing symptoms instead of restoring neurons lost to the illness.

The STEM-PD treatment aims to deliver fresh dopamine-producing cells, providing a regenerative method distinct from current approaches.

Introducing AI into this domain has presented hurdles; we aim to generate discussion and foster urgency within this community, Breakstone shared with the Magazine at the event.

He noted that much of the required technology for blending AI with biology already exists. The challenge lies not in persuasion but in implementation, he added.

A Danish Home

Denmark’s capital carries a rich legacy in therapeutics, and Breakstone described how the company found an ideal base upon finalizing the agreement with Novo Nordisk. We are embedding AI into the fabric of this environment here in Copenhagen.

Biology remains highly intricate, and for years, developing remedies for serious conditions required extended periods and substantial funding. Recently, AI integration in the field has yielded notable advances, such as enabling predictions of cellular reactions to outside signals.

With Novo Nordisk’s clinical-stage cell therapy program, Cellular Intelligence intends to deploy its AI foundation model, trained on millions of cellular perturbation scenarios, to hasten development and production of the treatment toward market readiness.

The company indicates its platform can shorten conventional cell-therapy schedules and lower manufacturing expenses, a significant hurdle for commercializing advanced regenerative medicine products.

The initiative’s advancement will receive close attention as experts and industry figures assess AI-supported pipelines for speeding next-generation therapies.

It can accelerate processes, said Jens Nielsen, CEO of BioInnovation Institute (BII) in Copenhagen and professor of systems biology at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

In remarks to the Magazine beside the event, Nielsen explained that AI aids in hastening preparations, analysis, development timelines, and expenses.

Cellular Intelligence, he observed, is merging technology with biology, which is highly complex.

The BII functions as a life science and DeepTech innovation center in Copenhagen, backing over 130 startups that have together secured more than 1 billion euros in outside investment.

According to Nielsen, Israel possesses strong innovation and momentum. We seek to bring that energy to Copenhagen. The blend of our background and this technology will strengthen the local network.

Nielsen, who has traveled to Israel multiple times and engaged with major figures, pointed out that while Israel hosts many biotech firms, health-tech companies are fewer. Denmark, despite its modest scale, provides considerable expertise in drug development.

It’s Personal

For Breakstone, pursuing a remedy for Parkinson’s holds personal significance. Yet the firm targets more than this single condition.

Cancer presents real interest. We are exploring initial ideas on the disease and remain hopeful about understanding how cancer develops and acts.

Vitaly Formin, CEO of Numenos, also aims to leverage AI for aligning drugs with biology and thereby cure everything, beginning with cancer.

The company reports that its CURE platform combines and examines clinical trial data, uncovering useful insights to inform choices and patient grouping.

With a varied team of entrepreneurs, biologists, physicists, and AI experts, the firm focuses on identifying biomarkers early in clinical trials to enable lower costs and higher success in phase three designs.

Formin emphasized that Numenos works to match drugs to individual biology and anticipate drug effects.

We examine the human as an integrated biological system. We identify the pattern of one disease and extend it to others, he remarked beside the event. Cancer represents a life process. Data from one cancer type can transfer to other conditions. The information links together.

Formin holds that AI assistance will give patients more time with physicians. We want every patient to hold a Ph.D.-level grasp of their condition, he said.

The future of biotech will reshape human progress, Formin stated.
