A 15-year-old Iraqi girl, Kawthar Bashar Al-Husayjawi, was murdered in the Nahrawan district east of Baghdad after she refused an arranged marriage to her cousin, according to reports from the nonprofit Iraqi Women’s Rights group and other feminist organizations released earlier this week.

Relatives reportedly invoked "washing shame" - a common pretext in honor killings - to rationalize the killing.

The feminist news site Sharika Walaken cited local accounts stating that Al-Husayjawi fled her home to escape marriage to her older cousin, leading her family to assume she had run off with a boyfriend.

She disappeared on a Wednesday evening, with her family reporting her missing the following day, per the rights group. Displeased with her behavior, her relatives allegedly transferred her to another tribal faction. Attackers, said to include family members, then took her to an isolated location and killed her.

Footage circulated by the platform purportedly depicts the girl’s family rejoicing post-murder. Journalist Aya Mansour noted that Al-Husayjawi’s mother lodged a formal complaint, verifying the incident’s details. Officials have not yet responded to the allegations.

Iraqi legislation enables child marriages

Advocacy groups highlight that 2025 changes to Iraq’s 1959 Personal Status Law - allowing marriages from age nine - have eroded safeguards against child exploitation.

Iraq’s penal code Articles 128 and 409 permit "honorable motives" as a mitigating factor in offenses like murder, frequently resulting in lighter penalties, as documented by Human Rights Watch and the United Nations Population Fund.
