The trend points to rising consumer interest in EVs as fuel costs increase. Analysts expect the sector to keep expanding steadily through the coming decade. Tesla and Rivian rank among the top names positioned to benefit. The question is which deserves the $1,000 allocation.

Tesla is much more than an EV play

Tesla holds the top spot in the global EV market after briefly losing it late in 2025 and reclaiming it during the first quarter of 2026. Its Model Y remains the top-selling vehicle worldwide for multiple years running. Second-quarter deliveries reached 480,126 units, marking a 25 percent year-over-year gain and surpassing analyst forecasts.

The share price dropped after the report, likely because the results were already priced in. Investor focus has moved beyond pure EV sales. The story now centers on robotaxi services and humanoid robots, which explains the high forward price-to-earnings ratio of 178.6.

Updates on these initiatives are more likely to move the stock. News on the humanoid robot program, possibly including an Optimus 3 reveal, could arrive by late July. The robotaxi service has started operating in Miami, giving the company additional real-world data to refine its autonomous system even if revenue impact remains limited for now.

Tesla still posts solid financial results. First-quarter revenue rose 16 percent to $22.4 billion, while adjusted earnings per share climbed 52 percent to $0.41. Heavy spending on artificial intelligence supports the robotaxi and robot efforts and could deliver strong returns if the strategy succeeds.

Can Rivian challenge the market leader?

Rivian introduced the R2, a midsize SUV priced to compete directly with Tesla's leading model. Early signs point to a successful launch. Second-quarter deliveries totaled 12,194 vehicles, beating the 9,000-to-11,000 guidance range, with the new model cited as a key driver.

The company is also advancing autonomous driving through a partnership with Uber Technologies to supply up to 50,000 self-driving vehicles by 2031. Uber plans to invest as much as $1.25 billion in Rivian under the agreement.

Strong consumer interest in the R2 combined with potential fleet demand for autonomous vehicles could support growth. First-quarter revenue increased 11 percent to $1.4 billion, and the net loss narrowed to $416 million from $541 million a year earlier. The new Georgia plant should improve margins once it reaches full scale.

Put $1,000 into this EV stock

Both companies carry notable risk and will likely see continued share-price swings. Still, Tesla appears the clearer choice for four main reasons. It remains the EV market leader with strong brand power and a broad manufacturing footprint that supports scale. This allows price adjustments to meet competition without damaging profitability as severely as smaller rivals.

Although smaller firms sometimes offer greater upside, Tesla's robotaxi and robot projects could drive substantial gains if they succeed. The company can finance its plans without issuing new shares, unlike Rivian, which recently announced a dilutive offering.

Rivian also depends more heavily on the outcome of individual initiatives. Missing targets on self-driving technology, for example, could trigger a sharp drop. Tesla enjoys greater flexibility and a wider margin for error. For these reasons, Tesla is the preferred pick, and $1,000 buys two shares.
