Building the next phase of AI infrastructure

Power access for data centers ranks among the top constraints on AI growth. Permitting delays, lengthy construction periods, and limited water supplies create further hurdles. Space-based data centers could ease many of these pressures, especially regarding energy, by tapping into continuous solar power. SpaceX has requested approval for 1 million satellites that would function as orbital data centers, positioning the company to lead in the coming generation of AI infrastructure.

SpaceX has already monetized spare compute capacity on the ground through agreements with Alphabet and the AI startup Anthropic. The same approach could apply in orbit, supplying real-time data processing to commercial and government clients that need low-latency analysis without terrestrial constraints.

Evaluating the expenses tied to AI goals

Goldman Sachs projects SpaceX AI revenue will climb sharply from $3.2 billion in 2025 to $322 billion by 2030. Overall company revenue is expected to reach $474 billion that same year. Still, these forecasts must be weighed against execution challenges. The S-1 noted that the AI segment is early in its development and faces integration and scaling risks.

Research from The Motley Fool shows heavy spending to support the strategy, including a $6.4 billion operating loss in 2025, $12.7 billion in AI capital expenditures, and $5.1 billion in research and development. Another $9.1 billion was recorded in other financings linked to AI infrastructure assets.

Adopting a long-term investment approach

With $26.5 trillion of the $28.5 trillion TAM tied to AI, SpaceX has clearly centered its strategy on this sector. The opportunity could generate substantial revenue, yet investors must accept the associated risks and the extended timeline required to deploy space-based systems.
