Major dividend growth names often draw attention to consumer staples equities. Yet their widespread appeal has left many appearing expensive with limited further gains ahead.

AbbVie, listed on the NYSE as ABBV, ranks among recognized dividend payers in the S&P 500 without appearing overvalued. It supplies shareholders an appealing combination of reasonable pricing, earnings progress, and income generation.

Headquartered in North Chicago, Illinois, AbbVie became independent in 2013 after Abbott Laboratories separated its drug operations. This link allowed AbbVie to assume Abbott's dividend record. Abbott achieved Dividend King status five years ago after fifty straight years of payout increases, granting AbbVie the same designation.

AbbVie's dividend record shows continued reliability. Over the thirteen years since the separation, the quarterly distribution rose from $0.40 to $1.73 per share, producing nearly 12 percent annualized growth.

Beyond the growth history, the stock provides a solid yield. Its forward yield stands near 3 percent, while the shares trade at roughly 16 times projected earnings.

That multiple exceeds those of certain rivals such as Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer, which change hands around nine times forward earnings. Those peers confront more immediate risks, whereas AbbVie has moved past similar challenges and projects ongoing profit increases.

What sets it apart among healthcare dividend payers

Many drug makers carry modest valuations because of looming patent losses on major products. Companies in the sector work to rebuild pipelines through internal development or purchases.

AbbVie once faced this patent-cliff pressure. After protecting Humira exclusivity as long as possible, biosimilar competition arrived in 2023 and reduced sales. Newer immunology treatments Skyrizi and Rinvoq have offset those losses effectively.

Following adjusted earnings near $10 per share in 2025, forecasts call for $14.24 this year and $16.23 in 2027. By comparison, Pfizer faces projected profit drops of 8 percent and 4 percent over the same two years.

With earnings growth keeping the payout ratio near 42 percent, a sustainable level, further dividend hikes averaging 5 to 6 percent annually appear likely. Combined with steady profit expansion, these factors support attractive total returns over multiple years, positioning AbbVie as a leading healthcare dividend choice.
